Another first secured for FGCU as Eagles defeat Brown, 4-2

Win marks program’s first victory over an Ivy League opponent

FORT MYERS, Fla. – In a year of firsts, FGCU continued to rewrite the record books as the Eagles' secured a 4-2 victory over Brown on Wednesday morning. That marks the program's first win over an Ivy League opponent, a conference known for its prowess in women's tennis.

This comes after this year's Eagles team became the first in school history to defeat a ranked opponent (4-3 over No. 75 ETSU) and Nora Svensson became the first ASUN player this dual season to defeat a ranked singles opponent.

FGCU (13-5) captured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and followed with singles victories at the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 6 spots to clinch the match. Brown, a team from the Ivy League that has produced 44 NCAA Tournament appearances since 1982, managed to earn points in singles at the No. 4 and No. 5 positions.

FGCU (13-5) jumped out from the start, securing the doubles point with two strong wins. First came Anjali Kotecha and Cecilie Maeland's 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Brown's Abigail Lee and Chloe Qin. That was quickly followed by Nora Svensson and June Bjork's 6-4 win over Dani Ben-Abraham and Hannah Shen, pushing the Svensson/Bjork duo to 4-0 on the year in doubles.

In singles action, the Eagles added to their lead as Ashley Matz secured a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win over Ali Maguy. Maguy, Brown's No. 3 singles player, had entered the match with 18 wins to her credit this year.

With FGCU leading 2-0, that is when Brown struck back. The Bears' first point came at No. 5 singles as Anne Yang posted a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. Lee tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-4 over FGCU's Maeland.

The Green & Blue defeated Brown at No. 6 singles to regain the lead, 3-2, as Anjali Kotecha secured the 6-2, 6-3 win over Qin. The Eagles' victory was secured long after, as Bjork finished off Ben-Abraham with a 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Svensson held a 7-5, 5-2 lead at No. 1 singles over Shen when the match was secured.

Up next for the Eagles is a home match against North Florida on Friday, April 3 at 10 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
