FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast (8-11) fell to Delaware (12-3) on Tuesday at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Eagles fought to a tie in the No. 1 doubles match in a midday battle but dropped the contest overall.
Delaware secured the doubles point with victories on courts two and three. Tobey Lock and Luke Tollenaar triumphed over
Mika Bunjes and
Gustav Hasslegren at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, while Federico Garbero and Pere Prat defeated
Stavros Hadjivarnava and
Tanner Povey at No. 3 doubles, 6-4. The match at No. 1 doubles between the Blue Hens' Euan Mackenzie and James Sclater and the duo of
Stefan Correa and
Pablo Paternostro from Florida Gulf Coast remained unfinished at 6-6 (1-0).
In singles play, Delaware extended its lead as Federico Garbero defeated Hadjivarnava at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1. The Blue Hens continued their momentum with Lock's win over Povey at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 5 singles, Tollenaar edged past Correa with a 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) victory.
The matches on courts three, four, and six were left unfinished. On court three, Bunjes and Mackenzie were tied at 6-4, 6-6 (0-1). On court four, Hasslegren and Prat were headed to a third set battle, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6. Finally,
CJ Smith and Sclater were in progress with a scoreline of 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 4-1 when the match concluded.
Up next for Florida Gulf Coast is a home match against North Florida on Friday, Mar. 27 at 1 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex. That will be the final home match of the regular season with a Senior Day Ceremony taking place before the match.
