FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU didn't bat an eye when facing an old Atlantic Sun Conference foe Friday morning, winning the doubles point and claiming four singles matches en route to a 5-2 win at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
The Eagles (12-4) secured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. In singles, Florida Gulf Coast clinched the match with wins on courts 2, 3, 5, and 6, overcoming losses to Liberty (9-5) on courts 1 and 4.
The team of
Cecilie Maeland and
Anjali Kotecha defeated Celina Joseph and Candy Wai, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles. Liberty picked up a win at No. 3 doubles as Daniella O'Neill and Milana Tsulygina edged
Sabrina Jaramillo and
Ashley Matz, 7-6 (7-1). FGCU bounced back with a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, where
Nora Svensson and
June Bjork triumphed over Yoanna Radulova and Maria Turchetto, a talented doubles team that was unable to add to its 15 wins so far this season.
In singles, the Green & Blue extended their lead when
Ashley Matz won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, over Maria Turchetto at No. 3 singles. Matz moved to 12-7 on the year while preventing Turchetto from claiming her 15
th victory of the season. Bjork added another point for the Eagles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 2 singles against Radulova. The Flames responded at No. 4 singles, where Tsulygina overcame Jaramillo, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, to put Liberty on the board.
Florida Gulf Coast clinched the match at No. 5 singles as Kotecha secured a three-set victory over Wai, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, as Wai became another Flame that was denied a 15
th win of the season.
Africa Burillo Berezak concluded the match for the Eagles with a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win against Joseph at No. 6 singles. With Burillo Berezak's win, she moved to 7-7 on the year, as every Eagle on the roster is now .500 or better in singles action this season. Liberty's O'Neill added a point at No. 1 singles, defeating Svensson, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Up next for the Eagles is a home match against East Tennessee State on Tuesday, March 17 at 10 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Game Notes:
- FGCU is now 7-1 all-time against Liberty. This marked the first time the two teams did not play as part of ASUN regular season or tournament play.
- With the win, Florida Gulf Coast moves to 34-11 all-time against current Conference USA programs.
- June Bjork and Ashley Matz both moved to 12-7 on the year in singles action.
- Anjali Kotecha registered her 14th singles win of the season.
