BOCA RATON, Fla. – FGCU (5-2) narrowly fell to Florida Atlantic (3-2), 4-3, on Friday at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center. The Eagles managed to secure three singles victories, with wins at the No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 positions. However, the Owls clinched the match by capturing the doubles point, along with three singles wins.
Florida Atlantic took the doubles point with victories on courts one and two.
Anjali Kotecha and
Nora Svensson fell 6-2 to Malwina Rowinska and Lara Smejkal at No. 1 doubles, dropping their first doubles match of the season.
In singles play, Florida Atlantic extended its lead with a win at No. 2 singles, where Panna Bartha secured a 6-0, 6-0 victory over No. 112
June Bjork. Rowinska then added a point for the Owls at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win over
Cecilie Maeland. Amirgaliyeva continued the momentum for the Owls by defeating Matz 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
The Green & Blue responded with a win at No. 1 singles as Svensson, the reigning ASUN Player of the Week, triumphed in three sets, overcoming Smejkal 6-3, 2-6, 10-1. At No. 6 singles,
Sabrina Jaramillo added another point for the Eagles with a three-set win, 1-6, 6-3, 10-6, against Patru. Kotecha closed out the singles matches with a victory at No. 5 singles, prevailing 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 over Pavkova.
Up next for the Eagles is a home match against Southeastern Louisiana on Monday, Feb. 16 at 9 a.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
