CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast doubles pair of
June Bjork and
Nora Svensson faced an undefeated doubles team from FAU at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, trailing early with a 3-2 deficit. About an hour later, that FAU team was no longer undefeated and the Eagles team had won six of the last seven games for an 8-4 win.
Bjork and Svensson (4-1) tallied their fourth win of the year and advanced to the Round of 16 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships held at the University of Miami campus. Now they will face to pair of Zoe Lazar and Kelly Loana Vargas Gonzalez of USF. It won't be the first time Lazar has had to face the pair from FGCU.
The first time Lazar squared off against Bjork and Svensson, the USF player was paired with a different teammate and claimed a 7-5 win at the Bedford Cup. On Sunday morning, the Eagles have a chance to exact revenge and advance to the ITA Southeast Regional Championship quarterfinals at the same time.
Svensson also claimed a singles win in consolation play, topping FIU's Viktorie Hazmukova, 7-5, 4-6, 10-7. In other consolation action,
Maria Vargas dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to No. 94 Joanna Kennedy of Florida State. In singles main draw action,
