JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast men's basketball (9-13, 3-6 ASUN) travels north to begin another road trip at Jacksonville (9-13, 4-5) at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 31.
The last time out,
Jordan Ellerbee led the charge for FGCU with 18 points on 4-for-7 shooting from 3-point range in the 72-64 win over North Alabama on Thursday.
Rory Stewart added 17 points and eight rebounds on 7-for-13 shooting from the field, and
Jack Reddick had an 11 point, four assist outing for the Eagles. Stewart's eight rebounds ties his career high and are his most as an Eagle.
The regular season sweep is the first for FGCU over the Lions since 2022. Head coach
Pat Chambers swept the Lions in his first opportunity, as 2022 was also the last time the two teams met twice in the regular season. With the win, the Eagles leveled the all-time series with UNA at 8-8.
Isaiah Malone had four blocks in the win, and leads the ASUN in blocks (43) and blocks per game (1.86). He is now nine blocks away from the second-best blocking single season by an Eagle all-time.
Jacksonville enters at 9-13 and 4-5 in ASUN play. The Dolphins earned a 70-65 win over Lipscomb on Thursday, and also have conference wins over EKU, North Alabama and West Georgia. Donovan Rivers led the Dolphins over the Bisons with a 17 point, nine rebound performance.
JU leads the ASUN in bench points per game, averaging 32.23 points from its reserves. 11 Dolphins average over 10 minutes played per game. The Dolphins are second in scoring defense in the conference, allowing just 72.7 points per game.
Only Hayden Wood (10 points per game) averages double-digit scoring for JU, but seven total players average over seven points per game. Donovan Rivers grabs 5.0 rebounds per game and Even Sterck tallies 3.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Jaylen Jones also notches 1.3 steals per game, and Jason Thirdkill Jr. totals 0.9 blocks per game.
FGCU leads the all-time series 23-12, has won seven games in a row and 15 of the last 16 over Jacksonville. Chambers is 5-0 against the Dolphins; the two squads have met every year except for the COVID-19 affected 2020-21 campaign. The Eagles are 9-8 on the road against JU.
