CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay (12-6, 6-1 ASUN) used an early run to take and maintain a lead throughout as the Governors earned an 83-61 win over Florida Gulf Coast men's basketball (8-12, 2-5) on Thursday afternoon.
Austin Peay scored 22 points off a season-high 18 turnovers from FGCU. The Govs also knocked down 12 3-pointers in their win.
Rahmir Barno scored 14 points and dished out five assists to lead FGCU and
Jordan Ellerbee added 12 points as the only other Eagle in double-digit scoring.
George Washington III made his return to the court for the first time since November 7 against Illinois. He scored five points and made a 3-pointer for the Eagles.
Isaiah Malone scored the first basket of the game on a layup, but Austin Peay went on a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to build a double-digit lead. Barno scored eight of his points in a row for FGCU to cut the deficit down to three, but another Eagles scoring drought followed as Collin Parker hit two triples to push the Govs lead back to 41-29 at halftime.
In the second half, FGCU got more offensive production, including six of
Tristen Guillouette's seven points as the Eagles shot 51.7% from the field in the frame, but Austin Peay maintained its double-digit lead throughout the period. Matt Enright and Rashaud Marshall each scored ten in the second half for the Govs, who only had one second half turnover en route to the 82-63 win.
Enright led Austin Peay with 19 points on 5-for-12 shooting from 3-point range. Marshall contributed 14 points and eight rebounds for the Govs.
With a significant snow & ice storm expected in Tennessee on Friday night and throughout the weekend, FGCU adjusted its schedule to play next at 1 p.m. ET / noon CT against Lipscomb on Friday for the first and only scheduled back-to-back gameday of ASUN regular season play.
