Freshman Brett Moore recorded the lowest round in Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf history Tuesday, an eight-under 63, for a runner-up performance at the SeaBest Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida. Sophomore Christian Figueredo drilled a hole-in-hole to tie for third place on the player leaderboard as FGCU finished second as a team.
"I'm really proud of our team. Congrats to Texas A&M," head coach Andrew Danna said. "They have a great team and are very well-coached. Our team did a great job managing the course today. It was a fun day. We had a hole-in-one from Christian, and Brett was able to break a program record with his round today."
Moore opened his historic round Tuesday with a birdie and sank five birdies on the front nine, putting the record within reach. He made the turn at five-under and on pace for 66. Moore produced back-to-back birdies on holes No. 10 and 11 and one more on hole 13. Going into the 14th hole, he was on pace to set the record with a 63. Disaster struck on the next two holes with back-to-back bogeys. Moore responded with a birdie on 17 to put himself back on pace to tie the record at 64.
Moore stepped up to the final tee box needing a birdie on 18 to break the record. He did just that. He birdied the 545-yard, par five 18th. In his second round of the event, he penciled in a par the very same hole. Five different players have recorded at least a 64, including a former Eagle and current PGA Tour player Frankie Capan III back in 2021-22, but no one had reached 63.
Moore's 63 was good enough to finish second at the tournament at nine-under-par, coming up just two shots short of the tournament crown. He recorded a 73 in the opening round and followed with a three-under 68 during Monday's second round. Texas A&M's Phichaksn Maichon secured the individual title at 11-under.
Figueredo entered the day in third place and would tie for third for the third straight tournament. He matched his season and career-low 66 in Monday's second-round action. On Tuesday, Figueredo fired a hole-in-one on the par-3 12th hole to highlight his final-round performance.
Both Sebastian Gamboa and Tom Scullion tied for 17th at even par. As a team, FGCU posted a season-low 275 in round two and closed with a 278 to finish at 19-under par, opening the spring season placing seven strokes back of No. 28 and tournament champion Texas A&M. The Eagles started three freshmen and two sophomores in the lineup in Jacksonville.
FGCU returns to the course Feb. 15-16 for the Gators Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, hosted by the University of Florida.
