FORT MYERS, Fla. –
Paloma Goldsmith and
Nora Svensson teamed up to clinch the doubles points for No. 63 Florida Gulf Coast University's women's tennis despite the Eagles falling 5-2 to No. 32 Yale University Friday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
"Yale is a well coached disciplined team and they competed better today," head coach Courtney Vernon said. "The ladies will learn a lot from this match and they will be ready for tomorrow."
Anjali Kotecha and
Francisca Vergara fell 6-3 on court No. 3 but the Eagles rallied back with
Isabella Colmenares and
Ashley Matz defeating No. 74 Erin Ha and Orly Ogilvy 6-4 on court No. 1.
The doubles point would all come down to court No. 2 and Goldsmith and Svensson kept persistent and gained a 7-6 (8) victory to clinch the doubles point for FGCU.
In singles, Ogilvy, who is ranked no. 83 for the Bulldogs, got Yale's first point as she won 6-3, 6-2 against Matz on court No. 1. Colmenares then fell 6-3, 6-3 on court No. 2. Yale pushed its advantage to 3-0 as Svensson dropped her match 6-4, 6-4 on court No. 5.
Kotecha would be the only Eagle to slow the Bulldogs as she won 7-5, 7-6 (6) on court No. 3 over Mirabelle Brettkelly. That was the final point for the Green and Blue as Vergara fell 4-6 in the first set and won the second 6-4 before ultimately dropping the third 4-6.
Gabriela Macias tried pushing through on court No. 6 with a 7-6 (6) win in the first set but dropped the last two with 6-4, 6-0 scores.
The Eagles remain home and will face University of South Alabama (5-2) Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
