The Florida Gulf Coast University beach volleyball team split its pair of matches Saturday at the Beach Berg Invitational hosted by Southern Mississippi, as the Eagles beat Atlantic Sun Conference rival North Alabama, 4-1, before falling to No. 6 Florida State, 5-0.
Against North Alabama, FGCU (2-2) again got top-notch play from its No. 4 and 5 pairs. Alexis Keeter and Ava Lilliquist claimed a 21-16, 21-12 win at No. 4, and Erin Miller and Mia Thompson posted a 21-18, 21-15 victory at No. 5 to give the Eagles a quick 2-0 lead over the ASUN rival. North Alabama got its first win at No. 1, where Selma Robinson and Katy Floyd beat Nicole De Oliveira and Kaitlyn Luebbers, 21-13, 21-17, to make it 2-1 FGCU.
The outcome of the overall match came down to a pair of three-set contests at the No. 2 and 3 pairings. At No. 2, the FGCU team of Jaci Carpenter and Emma Soncrant held off Ryenne Gepford and Pien Grooters, 21-16, 12-21, 15-13 to clinch the overall win for the Eagles, and the duo of Andrea Dietz and Sydney Majick finished off North Alabama's Paige Griner and Aurora Bibolotti, 21-14, 17-21, 15-11 at No. 3 to close out the 4-1 win for FGCU.
In the Florida State match, the Eagles were unable to record a victory, but FGCU did make the Seminoles earn the win, scoring at least 13 points in each set. FGCU's No. 3 team of Dietz and Majick, along with the No. 5 pair of Miller and Thompson were especially tough in their opening sets, falling 29-27 and 26-24, respectively, in their matches.
FGCU (2-2) is back in action next weekend, traveling to Tampa for the University of Tampa Invitational on Feb. 28.
