Men's golf finishes third at Gators Invitational

Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf entered the final day of the Gators Invitational sitting in fifth among a field of 15 premiere programs. The Eagles moved up two places in the final round Sunday to finish tied third behind No. 13 Florida and No. 7 Oklahoma State.

"The conditions today were extraordinarily tough with the wind and the rain," head coach Andrew Danna said. "I'm really proud of our team. They did a great job managing the day and getting out of there with a good result. We are looking forward to our next opportunity to compete."

The Eagles were one of only four teams to finish under par for the event, tallying a four-under-par, 836 performance over the course of three rounds. FGCU shot 274, 281 and 281. The Eagles' 274 in round one tied the fourth lowest of the tournament and emerged just three strokes off first place after the opening round.

Tournament host Florida won the team title at 17-under. Oklahoma State took second at 16-under.

Sebastian Gamboa paced FGCU as he finished tied for sixth with a three-under 207 (68-68-71). Shooting back-to-back 68s in rounds one and two, he entered the final round tied for fifth. Gamboa registered 12 birdies and, in his final round Sunday, was bogey-free on the back nine.

Teammate and fellow Eagle Brett Moore placed in the top 15. He finished tied for 11th with a 209, just two shots back of Gamboa.

Nolan Harper tallied a top-25 finish as he tied for 21st.  He carded the lowest round for the Eagles with a one-under-par, 69.

Tom Scullion finished tied for 26th at 214. Rounding out the starting five, Christian Figueredo finished tied for 32nd with a combined score of 215.

FGCU is back in action March 10-11 as the Eagles travel to the Seminole Intercollegiate.
