Eagles look to close 2025 strong against Fort Lauderdale

Men's basketball to end 2025 calendar year at home

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast men's basketball will end the 2025 calendar year at home against Fort Lauderdale at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The Eagles are looking to stop a five-game skid after falling to UCF before Christmas. The Knights entered averaging eight 3-point attempts per game, but buried 19 on 35 attempts for their best game from behind the arc this season. The Eagles finished at a higher percentage on their shots from distance, but made four less, going 15-for-27 from deep in the 80-102 defeat.

FGCU (5-7) is in the midst of and aiming to break out of its longest losing streak by calendar days in program history (31 days without a win). The previous record was 29 days, twice, from Nov. 22-Dec. 20, 2010 and from Nov. 13-Dec. 11, 2011. Both of those losing streaks encompassed six games.

FGCU has struggled with strong competition in the month of December and in the 2025-26 season. All seven losses have come against FBS schools, including the last five. FGCU's only win over a FBS school was its 78-63 overtime win against Rice on Nov. 25 during Coconut Hoops; it was also the Eagles' last win.

The tough slate has been magnified by the lack of games. While it's FGCU's longest losing streak by calendar days without a win, the Eagles have had six longer losing skids by total number of consecutive games lost in program history (five six game losing streaks, one seven game losing streak); all of those took less time on the calendar than the current run in the wrong direction.

Sunday's contest will be the first in program history between FGCU and Fort Lauderdale. The NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) school is in its sixth season of basketball.

UFTL (6-9) is led by Chris Berry, who scores 11.1 points per game. Corey Pope tallies 5.0 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game; Vugar Kuliev notches 2.8 assists per game and Adrian Body II records 2.8 steals per game. Fort Lauderdale lost 104-80 to Florida International and 106-77 to Stetson in its two previous Division I matchups.

JR Konieczny, Jordan Ellerbee and Rahmir Barno (44.6 combined PPG) will again try to get the Eagles back in the win column on Sunday afternoon.
