Tom Scullion and Brett Moore are tied for fifth as Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf ended day one of the Rod Myers Invitational in third place from Durham, North Carolina.
"I'm really proud of our team," head coach Andrew Danna said. "They did a great job all day. We are looking forward to another opportunity to compete tomorrow."
Scullion began the day with a team-low, three-under 69 – a season-low for the Cumberland University transfer. He produced a flawless back-nine effort in round one, with two birdies and no bogeys. Scullion sat atop the player leaderboard as he made the turn in the second round.
However, the second-round back-nine was not as friendly to the first-year Eagle. After back-to-back birdies on holes No. 11 and 12, he penciled in four straight bogeys and finished the round with an even 72.
Moore, a freshman, sank four straight birdies in round one for a two-under 70 showing. In round two, he caught fire late with a pair of birdies on No. 16 and 17 to climb into the top five at three-under-par alongside Scullion heading into Monday's final round.
Nolan Harper is tied for 14th at one-under, producing rounds of 71 and 72. Sebastian Gamboa is tied for 23rd, and Brody Stevenson is tied for 44th overall.
Four Eagles turned in an under-par scorecard to open the tournament. FGCU's opening-round 280 marked a low for the early season. The Green & Blue leads the 11-team field, six of which are from the state of North Carolina, in made birdies with 40.
FGCU climbed as low as 14-under as a team, taking the tournament lead but settled at seven-under and in third place behind NC State and tournament host Duke. FGCU trails both the Blue Devils and the Wolfpack by just three shots.
The third and final round is scheduled for Monday.
