FGCU defeats No. 16 FSU in front of program's second-largest crowd

FORT MYERS, Fla. - In front of a crowd of 1,016 fans, Florida Gulf Coast University upset No. 16 Florida State University, 3-1, in the team's 11th win over a ranked opponent in the Division I era.

Angelina Bonilla carried the team in the circle, pitching a complete game and allowing just one earned run. Eight Eagles batters reached base to get enough offense to secure the victory.

FGCU 3, FSU 1

The scoring started early for the Eagles when Sophie Wylie singled home a run in the second to get the first run for the Green and Blue before she came around to score herself off an Emily Chiarella single to shortstop.

Kayleigh Roper came on in pinch-hitting duties and put a ball over the first baseman and down the right field line to bring home Nikki Gibson to secure the third run.

The only Florida State run came off a fly ball to right field but it was not enough for the Seminoles as the Eagles won 3-1.

This win marks the 11th win over a ranked opponent in FGCU's Division I history. It is the first since May 7, 2022 against No. 10 Florida.

FGCU 6, WMU 2

After one of the biggest wins in program history, the Green and Blue had to get back out for a game against Western Michigan.

FGCU surrendered two early runs before the bats came to the rescue. Havoc on the basepaths, this time by way of McKenzie Wittenberg drawing an errant throw from the catcher, allowing Wittenberg to score and Gibson to advance to third.

Tiffany Meek then brought home Gibson to tie the game up at two in the bottom of the second.

The Eagles took their first lead of the game in the third when Neely Peterson brought in Riley Oakes.

Two more runs put the game out of reach when speed prevailed with Gibson scoring on a ball in the infield and Olivia Black scored on a wild pitch.
