FORT MYERS, Fla. - Florida Gulf Coast University softball wrapped up the final day of the FGCU Spring Break Classic with a 3-2 win over the University of Pittsburgh.
"I'm really proud of our team's resilience all weekend long," Head Coach
David Deiros said. "We'll be better as a result because the only thing that happens from playing teams this good is you get the experience to know you can play with them and hang."
In the second game on the day, the Eagles fell to FSU 13-6.
FGCU 3, Pitt 2
FGCU jumped out to an early lead, getting two runs by way of a
Neely Peterson single to bring home
Tiffany Meek.
Nikki Gibson added to the tally with a single to short that brought home
Meagan Ricks.
Pitt would claw back two runs before a
Caridad Estes bunt brought home and Gibson came around to score.
Allison Sparkman took the mound for the start allowing one run and striking out four.
Angelina Bonilla came on in relief for Sparkman, wrapping up the final three innings striking out three and allowing just one run.
FSU 13, FGCU 6
The Eagles continued the trend of fast first inning starts with four in this game. Peterson got the scoring starting again for the Green and Blue with another RBI single.
A wild pitch allowed
Meagan Ricks to come across followed shortly by Peterson by way of a Gibson single.
Olivia Black completed the scoring for the inning with a single up the middle allowing
Emily Chiarella to touch home.
Madison Carr drove in two with a double over the right fielder's head.
Claire Maulding got the start for the Green and Blue, not allowing a hit until the third inning.
Up next is a doubleheader tomorrow against USF at 4 and 6:30 p.m.
