Florida Gulf Coast University rallied to win its Atlantic Sun Conference women's tennis opener Wednesday in Louisville, Kentucky as the Eagles defeated Bellarmine University 4-3 at the Eddie Webber Tennis Complex.
"The ladies competed very hard today under a lot of adversity," said head coach
Courtney Vernon. "We are an outdoor team and had to play indoors. Bellarmine has improved a lot and they pushed us. We will grow a lot from today's match and look forward to competing against Queens tomorrow."
Although FGCU's
Isabella Colmenares and
Gabriela Macias won 7-5 at No. 3 doubles, the Eagles (3-4, 1-0 ASUN) dropped decisions at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles by 7-5 scores to lose the doubles point.
In singles action, Bellarmine (6-8, 0-1 ASUN) won at No. 3 and No. 6, but the Eagles battled back to take the victory. At No. 1,
Fanny Norin earned a late break in the first set, then won a tiebreak in the second to take the match, 7-5, 7-6 (4). Colmenares won at No. 2 singles 7-6 (5), 6-4. At No. 4,
Jordana Ossa earned the win 7-6 (4), 6-4.
The match would come down to No. 5 singles.
Ida Ferding would take the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (4), the marched through the second set 6-4 to clinch the victory for the Green & Blue.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow at noon against Queens University of Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina.
