FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer fell to FAU on Tuesday, 3-0. The Eagles held the Owls without a shot on goal in the first half before conceding three in the second.
"I thought during the first half we did some good things," head coach
Jesse Cormier said. "We had opportunities, a lot of chances that we need to meet and we need to convert. That's something we want to get right for Saturday against Lipscomb."
FGCU started strong in the first half keeping FAU from getting a shot on frame. The first half didn't provide much offense for either side with the only shot on target coming from a
Leo Schorr attempt in the 34
th minute.
The second half started with the Owls not seeing significant offensive pressure for the first 10 minutes. In the 56
th minute, FAU would break through with a low shot across the box to the lower 90, beating the FGCU keeper.
The floodgates would open after that with FAU scoring two more, in the 68
th minute to bring the score to 2-0 and the third and final goal with 16 seconds remaining.
With this game behind FGCU, the Green and Blue look ahead to Saturday's pivotal match against Lipscomb. The Eagles and Bisons both sit on four points in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings with FGCU having a game in hand. A win could propel the Eagles to a tie for second in the ASUN.
"If we take the game against Lipscomb, and I think we can, we're pushing for second place," Cormier said. "I we take that game it puts us in a good position to achieve our goal to get into the playoffs and host."
