FORT MYERS, Fla. - A first half of persistent offensive pressure, punctuated by a
Luke Barforosh goal in the 28th minute, carried Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer to a win over Lipscomb on Saturday. The win moves FGCU into a tie for third place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings with a game in hand.
"I'm so happy for the guys," head coach
Jesse Cormier said. "We had 19 shots in the first half. We were so ambitious, fighting for every moment, I thought we had it tonight. I think the guys know when we have that type of energy, that type of unity, we are tough to beat. I'm proud of the guys."
The first half saw a spirited offensive performance, with 19 shots, earning four corners. The Eagles kept the ball in their offensive half for much of the first half before Barforosh put the ball in the back of the net from a ball that was placed in the box by
Shoki Yoshida. After the ball bounced around about 10 yards from the net, the ball landed at Barforosh's feet when the wingback found a spot to get it past the keeper.
The Eagles came out firing in the second half with
Beltran Alvarez feeding
Addrian Knights-Browne with a beautiful through pass to get Knights-Browne on goal. Knights-Browne put the ball on target which the keeper parried away towards the feet of a trailing
Leo Schorr, who put the ball into the open net for the 2-0 lead.
Lipscomb attempted to counter to earn at least one point but
Cooper Blay provided the length in goal to get to any ball put towards him for his first clean sheet of the season.
The Green and Blue are now tied for third in the ASUN with Central Arkansas on seven points. The Bears and Eagles face each other on Friday in a match that will provide significant clarity at the top of the ASUN table. FGCU has a game in hand after the postponement against Bellarmine, who is winless in the conference.
