FORT MYERS, Fla. – A flurry of late action sent Florida Gulf Coast men's soccer to a 1-1 draw with FAU on senior night and in the nonconference finale.
FGCU thought it had found a game-winning goal in the 87th minute when
Hugo Munter got his head on a perfect corner kick from
Emilio Rossi to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Owls, however, amped up their press in the final moments and found an equalizer with 37 seconds remaining to bring the game to the 1-1 tie.
The contest began slowly after the Eagles (4-5-3) honored midfielder
Brian Lopez, midfielder
Jai Sahni and goalkeeper
Eduard Garcia pregame for senior night. Both sides tested the waters in the midfield early, with FAU finding more opportunities against
Harvey Sellers in his debut in goal as an Eagle. Sellers made saves on all three FAU shots on goal in the first half, and his counterpart, Alfred Mikkelsen, recorded one such save.
The Eagles and Owls each had missed opportunities throughout the tilt. FAU's (3-1-6) best look before their late goal came in the 71st minute. Sellers made a diving save on the far side of the net, but the ball rebounded in front with space to score. An Owl slipped racing to the ball, then popped the close chance just over the crossbar as an Eagle defender closed in.Â
The battle on the pitch intensified following the Owls' 71st minute miss. Of the 22 combined second half shots and 32 total tries on the evening, 15 came in the final half hour of play. Mikkelsen made a pair of saves in quick succession in the 73rd minute, the latter a diving effort to stop a
Brooks Beeman chance.
Mikkelsen's save was the last one made by either keeper, as multiple players narrowly missed the goal with late shot attempts. FGCU sent two chances inches above the crossbar, and one found the netting atop the goal. Meanwhile, FAU saw a late chance ripple the outside of the net, and it seemed as if the game might end scoreless.
An offensive breakthrough finally came after Sahni sent a shot that an Owl defender deflected out to set up
Emilio Rossi for a corner in the 87th minute. Rossi curled the ball directly to the leaping head of Munter on the near side of the goal, who angled the ball to the net for the Eagles' latest score of the season.
The tested FAU squad did not relent, though, and took a pair of shots as time ticked away before equalizing with just 37 seconds remaining.Â
The draw represents FGCU's first result against their cross-state rivals since a win at Pickering Field in 2022, snapping a three-game skid. It's the third tie all-time between the two programs, and the first since 2020.
Next, the Eagles resume ASUN action and conclude their four-game homestand at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 against Lipscomb.
