No. 30 Eagles Eclipse 100-Homer Mark in Win vs. Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 30 FGCU baseball team (31-11 overall, 14-5 ASUN Conference) opened a key ASUN series Friday night with another offensive eruption, blasting four home runs among 15 hits in a 12-2 victory over Austin Peay at Raymond C. Hand Park.

The four homers give FGCU a nation-best 102 home runs this year, which has also smashed the single-season school record. The Eagles also notched three doubles, which makes 102 this season – making the Green & Blue the only team in the country with 100-plus home runs and 100-plus doubles.

More importantly, FGCU maintained its grip on a share of first in the ASUN, as Lipscomb also earned a victory against Eastern Kentucky to also move to 14-5 in the league. Austin Peay dropped to 22-21 overall and 12-7 in the ASUN.

Senior pitcher/outfielder Stephen Wilmer (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview HS/Pasco-Hernando State/ECU), graduate outfielder Brian Ellis (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS), senior infielder Alejandro Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State), and sophomore outfielder Harrison Povey (Indian Rocks Beach, Fla./Largo HS) all went deep Friday night for FGCU.

Senior catcher/infielder Alejandro Rodriguez (Cidra, Puerto Rico/Montverde Academy/Eastern Florida State) went 4-for-6 with two doubles and three RBIs. Senior right-hander Nick Love (Fernandina Beach, Fla./Yulee HS/Central College of Florida/Jacksonville) turned in arguably his best start of 2023, scattering four hits over 6 2/3 innings with six strikeouts to improve to 3-1.

"This is such a special group, and tonight it came from Rodriguez hitting in the 8-hole," said FGCU head baseball coach Dave Tollett. "Hitting four out of the park is big, but I thought it was a complete game. We got a great start from Nick Love on a Friday night, and played really well defensively."

Wilmer kicked things off in the second in grand fashion, bashing the first pitch he saw from Austin Peay starter Jacob Kush (6-1) over the right-field fence for a 1-0 FGCU lead.

The Governors tied it on a sacrifice fly in the third inning, but Ellis untied it in the fourth with a two-run homer to right-center that made it 3-1 and also extended his unofficial NCAA record for consecutive games reaching base to 111.

Austin Peay trimmed that deficit to 3-2 in the fourth, only to see FGCU erupt for three runs in the fifth. Figueredo launched his 14th homer of the season deep to left-center, sophomore infielder Jake Mummau (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS/St. Petersburg College) singled up the middle to score a run, and Rodriguez doubled Wilmer home for a 6-2 advantage.

Senior designated hitter Joe Kinker (North Port, Fla./Venice HS) belted a two-run single in the seventh to make it 8-2, and the Eagles tacked on four insurance runs in the ninth – as Povey launched a solo homer to right, Rodriguez singled in a run, and a final run was pushed across via a Governors wild pitch.

The two teams take the field again at 2 p.m. Saturday. FGCU expects to start freshman Justin Henschel (Plantation, Fla./South Plantation HS) opposite Austin Peay's Lyle Miller-Green.
