FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 2023 FGCU beach volleyball season officially gets underway this weekend as the Eagles head to the Stetson Season Opener at the Cooper Beach Courts.

The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Friday, with the Green & Blue taking on Florida Atlantic, and then facing North Florida at noon. FGCU takes on host Stetson at 10 a.m. Saturday, and then Mercer at 2 p.m. Live stats for each match will be provided.

FGCU is coming off a 29-9 program-best overall record last spring that included two victories over top-20 programs. The Eagles picked up wins over North Alabama, North Florida, Jacksonville State, Jacksonville, Central Arkansas and UNCW in the ASUN Championship Tournament before falling to top-seeded Stetson.
Junior
Kacie Johnson (Frisco, Texas/ Lebanon Trail) was named the ASUN Preseason Player of the Year earlier this week, and Johnson joined seniors
Shelby Beisner (
Port Charlotte, Fla./Charlotte) and
Maddison Parmelly (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall Health) on the ASUN Preseason All-Conference Team.

FGCU is 5-10 all-time against FAU, 11-23 against North Florida, 4-26 against Stetson, and 15-7 against Mercer. The Eagles most recent win over the Hatters came on March 18, 2022, with Stetson being ranked No. 17 nationally at the time.

COACH SWEAT
Sweat's 2022 team finished with a program-high 29 wins, and Sweat earned his 50th career victory in just his third season as coach. Sweat became the first coach in FGCU program history to earn ASUN Coach of the Year accolade after guiding his team to its 11th-consecutive appearance in the ASUN Championship. The Eagles earned wins over two top-25 teams in 2022, downing No. 17 Stetson and No. 18 South Carolina while also taking down seven different conference squads. Sweat's FGCU program again ascended to a No. 20 ranking in the AVCA Top 20 in March 2022 and maintained that ranking through the ASUN Tournament.
