FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Suncoast Credit Union FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athletes of the Month for April have been announced with junior
Maddison Parmelly (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall Heath) of the No. 20 beach volleyball program and senior
Brady Madsen (Raymond, Minn./Maccray HS/Winona State) of the men's golf program earning the honor.
A female and male Eagle are chosen as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month throughout the academic year. Factors in the selection for the honor include a combination of significant athletic and overall success. Cana Davis of softball and Alejandro Figueredo of baseball earned the distinction for the month of March.
Parmelly helped the nationally ranked beach volleyball program set a new record for single-season wins as the Eagles finished the year 29-9 overall as runner-ups in the ASUN Championship Tournament. She and
Kacie Johnson were named ASUN Pair of the Year marking the first time in program history for a set of Eagles to earn the honor. The duo were also named to the All-ASUN First Team, earned ASUN All-Tournament accolades, and finished the season with a 26-10 record at the No. 1 flight. Included in that mark were three wins over Top 25 opponents: No. 14 Georgia State, No. 17 Stetson, and No. 18 South Carolina. She finished the regular season going 11-5 while posting a 6-0 mark in the ASUN Tournament.
She was also named to the ASUN All-Academic Team this spring. She holds a 3.78 grade-point-average in psychology while posting 48 career wins including 26 this year. During her career, Parmelly has been an honoree on the AD Honor Roll, the Dean's List, the President's List, and the ASUN Honor Roll, while also being a member of the E.A.G.L.E. Leadership Institute.
"Maddie is one of the most dedicated student-athletes here at FGCU - on and off the court. She takes her academics as serious as anyone," said head coach
Chris Sweat. "I know the time and effort she has put into her school work and FGCU beach volleyball. I could not be more proud of the growth she has made in all aspects of being a student-athlete. I cannot wait to watch it carry into the next few years and beyond."
Madsen has been an integral part of the men's golf team which finished second at the ASUN Championship and is predicted to be an at-large berth to the upcoming NCAA Tournament which would mark the first program in FGCU history to do so. The senior has played in all 11 tournaments on the year with a 73.15 scoring average through 33 rounds. He has posted three rounds in the 60's and has eight at par-or-better. He placed seventh at the Auburn Invitational which the Eagles won as a team and took 11
th at the ASUN Championship. At the Auburn Invitational, he and teammate
Frankie Capan III each tied the program record for a single-round low score after shooting 64 in the first.
Academically, he holds a 3.31 grade-point average in management and has been a member of the AD Honor Roll and a member of the ASUN Honor Roll. Madsen was a 2021 Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar last spring after posting a 73.17 scoring average.
"It is awesome to see Brady honored this way," said head coach
Andrew Danna. "It is a reflection of all his hard work on the golf course and in the classroom. We are very proud of Brady and all the leadership he brings to our program."
