FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Suncoast Credit Union FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athletes of the Month for February have been announced with
Fanny Norin (Stockholm, Sweden/Thoren Business School) of women's tennis and
Jon Hopkins (Bishop's Stortford, England/Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) of men's golf earning the honor.
A female and male Eagle are chosen as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month throughout the academic year. Factors in the selection for the honor include a combination of significant athletic and overall success. Haley Yerxa of women's golf and Brian Ellis of baseball earned the distinction for the month of January.
Norin is 11-11 on the year including 4-1 at No. 4 singles play and 2-0 in ASUN matches. In doubles matches, she has posted a 13-8 overall record going 8-2 in the No. 3 position. Against No. 61 Florida State, Norin won in two sets at No. 4 singles to kick off a string of four straight wins. In doubles play, she has wins over Colorado, Notre Dame, Minnesota, St. John's, and Liberty on the season.
In the classroom, Norin currently holds a 3.6 grade-point-average as a pre-marketing major and has been a member of the AD Honor Roll, Dean's List, and was recognized at the Academic Honors Luncheon. She is also a member of the Eagles Council. Additionally, Norin has contributed 33 hours of service to the greater Southwest Florida community by taking part in Night at the Nest, Letter Writing to Active Service Members, Virtual Reading as well as helping in Bonita Bay and with the Midwest Food Bank.

Courtney Vernon. "She goes above-and-beyond every day to work on her academics and athletics and is extremely disciplined. This award is a testament to that work."
Hopkins has been one of the top performers for the No. 49 rank men's golf team with four top-15 finishes this season. He took third at the Coral Creek Club Invitational to help the Eagles win the team title. On the year, he has posted a 72.42 scoring average with 11 rounds at par-or-better and seven where he scored in the 60's which is tied for the team lead.
Academically, Hopkins holds a 3.8 grade-point-average as a management major. A member of the Eagles Council, Hopkins has been honored academically as a member of the AD Honor Roll, the Dean's List, and was recognized at the Academic Honors Luncheon. In the community, Hopkins has volunteered 15 hours assisting with the Naples Therapeutic Riding Center, Night at the Nest, and the Midwest Food Bank.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 90 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 14+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just 10 seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 44 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 20, 2021-22), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2022) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 25 consecutive semesters. The past five semesters (Fall 2019 – Fall 2021) each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA in each. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
