FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Suncoast Credit Union FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athletes of the Month for March have been announced with redshirt-senior
Cana Davis (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby HS/Virginia Tech) of softball and junior
Alejandro Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State) of baseball earning the honor.
A female and male Eagle are chosen as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month throughout the academic year. Factors in the selection for the honor include a combination of significant athletic and overall success. Fanny Norin of women's tennis and Jon Hopkins of men's golf earned the distinction for the month of February.
Davis is having a tremendous senior season for the Eagles after transferring from Virginia Tech, leading the Green and Blue with a .396 batting average, eight home runs, eight doubles, two triples, 25 RBI, and 19 runs scored. She is also leading the team with a .482 on-base percentage, a .771 slugging percentage and 1.253 OPS while also playing solid defense in right field.
In the classroom, she was named to the Dean's List last semester with a 3.94 GPA and is set to graduate this May with her second bachelor's degree in Communications. Additionally, she has contributed 40 hours of community service at Keep Lee County Beautiful, Night at the Nest, Ignite Student Ministries, and various softball camps.
"Cana has had great super-senior season so far," said head coach
David Deiros. "She has not only been a leader on the field but in the classroom as well as she will graduate next month with her second degree with honors. I couldn't be more proud of the work she has done this year."
Figueredo has been one of the top performers for the Eagles this year on the field, helping the Green and Blue to a 21-12 record so far. He has started all 33 games this season and is leading the team with a .381 batting average and 51 hits, 23rd-most in the nation. Figueredo has also hit six home runs, 10 doubles, and a triple, while collecting 33 RBI and scoring 29 runs.
Academically, Figueredo has a 3.66 GPA while pursuing an Integrated Studies degree. He earned a spot on the AD Honor Roll last semester and is also a two-time member of the Dean's List. Figueredo has also done 40 hours of community service at the Youth Baseball Camp, Night at the Nest, Naples Therapeutic Riding Center, and Laces of Love.
"I would like to congratulate Alejandro for being the scholar-athlete of the month," said head coach
Dave Tollett. "He continues to excel in the field in the classroom and in this community. He makes us very proud in all the ways that he contributes to our program and is a fine young man."

The past five semesters (Fall 2019 – Fall 2021) each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA in each. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
