FORT MYERS, Fla. – A solo home run by
Cana Davis and a two-run shot by
Tayli Filla proved the difference makers as the FGCU softball team earned a 3-0 win over Jacksonville State to take the series 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex. The Eagles improved to 13-22 overall and 6-6 in ASUN action, while JSU fell to 20-15 overall and 4-5 in league play.
Â
"It was good to pick up the win today after yesterday's split," said head coach
David Deiros. "I thought the defense made several good plays to keep Jacksonville State from getting too many opportunities and Ally was strong in the circle."
Â
Davis hit her team-best eighth homerun of the season in the fourth inning to put the Eagles up 1-0 on her solo blast. Filla added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning with her home run in the sixth – her second homer of the season.
Â
Hulme (9-9) went the distance in the circle with four strikeouts and just one walk while giving up just three hits in the game.
Â
The Eagles tallied eight hits overall in the game including 2-for-2 performances from
Reedy Davenport and
Neely Peterson.
Â
Sarah Currie took the loss for the Gamecocks recording five strikeouts in the game.
Â
The Gamecocks looked to threaten in the seventh inning when Karsen Mosley hit a one-out double to get into scoring position. Hulme quickly ended the threat with back-to-back strikeouts to close out the game for the win.
Â
FGCU will return to action next Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10, with a series at Stetson. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 1 PM on Saturday before closing the series on Sunday with a 1 PM first pitch.
