DELAND, Fla. – FGCU softball dropped a doubleheader pair of games at Stetson on Saturday as the Hatters took game one 5-0 and secured the series win with a 2-1 victory in game two.
The Eagles fell to 13-24 overall and 6-8 in ASUN play. The Hatters improved to 18-22 overall and 7-4 in league play following Saturday's wins, snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Eagles.
Game three of the weekend road series is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
"Proud of how we battled all day this afternoon despite the gusty winds," head coach David Deiros said. "We were just a hit away here and there from coming out on top but credit to Stetson's pitching performances. Ready to bounce back tomorrow to stay in the hunt for a berth into the ASUN tournament."
Game one remained scoreless through five and a half complete before Stetson was able to put up a three-spot in the bottom half of the inning. In the top half of the fifth, an Eagle baserunner was thrown out at the plate to keep the FGCU from striking first and capturing the lead.
Stetson would add a pair of runs in the sixth en route to its 5-0 game-one victory. The Hatters outhit the Eagles 8-6 in game one.
Reedy Davenport highlighted the Green and Blue's offense in game one with a 2-for-3 effort up at the plate, connecting on a single and a double.
Ally Hulme was credited with the game-one loss in the circle for the Eagles with 5.0 innings of work, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out four. In the circle for the Hatters, Lauren Hobbs registered a complete-game shutout.
Cana Davis' hit streak of nine games and her reached base streak of 17 games was also snapped in game one.
In game two action, FGCU loaded the bases in the final frame with just one away but were unable to push across a run to extend the contest.
Stetson struck first in the second with a leadoff triple and a sac fly to take a 1-0 advantage. FGCU would later tie the game in the sixth courtesy of a Davis sac fly, scoring Amaya Gainer. However, the Hatters answered in the bottom of the inning with another leadoff triple to go along with a RBI-single to reclaim the lead for the eventual win.
Offensively, Davis, Hope Hernandez and Avery Viancos recorded FGCU's three game-two hits as Stetson outhit the Eagles once again, 5-3.
