Wakefield Qualifies for Zones, Swim and Dive Falls at FIU

MIAMI, Fla. – The FGCU swim and dive team competed at FIU, Saturday, in Miami, falling to the Panthers, 190-109.

"We came into today with two goals, executing our events better than we did last week and exchanges on relays, and we did a great job on both," said head coach Dave Rollins. "Congratulations to Reese [Wakefield] who qualified for NCAA Zones on both the 1m and 3m. Emma [Hixenbaugh] coming away with an event win is always special and seeing our team challenge themselves to finish their races is huge for us moving forward. Now we get to focus on celebrating our seniors and all of their accomplishments and contributions to this program as we head into the final push of the season."

Sophomore Emma Hixenbaugh (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS) picked up the lone win for the Eagles on the day as she touched first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.30.

The other big highlight of the day was at the diving pool as junior Reese Wakefield (Guelph, Ontario, Canada/Bishop Macdonelle CHS) qualified for NCAA Zones on both the 1m and 3m. On the 1m, she scored 291.00 while on the 3m, she put up a score of 294.68, both well above the NCAA qualifying threshold. She becomes the fourth Eagle to qualify for zones, joining her sister Megan Wakefield (Guelph, Ontario, Canada/Centennial CVI), and juniors Isabeau Keene (Demorest, Ga./Tallulah Falls HS) and Delaney Nelson (Cinicinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy).

The Eagles had a couple of second-place finishes in the pool as senior Wiktoria Czarnecka ( (Lublin, Poland/Liceum NR 10 W Lublinie) touched second in the 50 free as did senior Petra Halmai (Dombovar, Hungary/Lanczos Kornel Secondari Grammar School) in the 200 breast and the 200 IM.

FGCU will return to action on February 4-5 when they welcome North Florida for a two-day meet. Friday, the fourth will be Senior Day for the Eagles as the program will honor seven seniors before the meet.
