Women’s Golf Takes Fifth at UNF Collegiate

Laura Edmonds tied for sixth individually; Eagles post third-best score of third round.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior Laura Edmonds (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Cypress Bay) tied for sixth individually and the FGCU women's golf team placed fifth overall as the Eagles concluded the final round of the UNF Collegiate on Tuesday afternoon at the Jacksonville Golf and Country Club. The Eagles had their best round on Tuesday shooting 291 which was the third lowest team score of the final 18 holes.
 
"We played much better today, but still have to clean up a lot of shots out on the course," said head coach Sarah Trew. "We need to work on our wedges and sharpen up our short game before our next tournament."
 
North Florida won the overall team title with a 289 third round score and a 54-hole total of 878. Sam Houston State (888) and Chattangooga (892) finished second and third, respectively. Hanna Alberto of Sam Houston was the individual winner with a two-score of 214.
 
Edmonds, who was tied for fourth after two rounds, shot 72 on Tuesday which matched her first round total. She finished with a three-round score of 219 and led the field with 11 birdies overall. After posting six birdies on Monday in two rounds, Edmonds had five in today's third round.
 
Junior Josephine Bertelsen (Vejle, Denmark/Campus Vejle/Western Texas College) finished her first tournament as an Eagle tied for 17th with a two-day score of 225. On Tuesday, she matched her second round score of 74. Sophomore Sarah Edwards (Jay, Fla./Jay) posted her best round of the tournament with a score of 73 to finish tied for 25th.
 
Redshirt senior Ailsa Clark (Navarre, Fla./Navarre) tied Edmonds on Tuesday for the Eagles' low score with a 72 which moved her into a tie for 30th (229), while redshirt sophomore Haley Yerxa (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) cut six-strokes off her second round score to shoot 74 on the final 18 holes.
 
Paced by Bertelsen's 40 holes at par, the Eagles led the 17-team field in the category with 179 total.
 
FGCU will return to action on Monday and Tuesday, March 15-16, at the Spring Break Shootout co-hosted by Western Kentucky and the Eagles. The event will be held at the Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City, Fla.

COACH TREW
Since taking over the program in 2011, Sarah Trew has guided the Eagles to 42 top-five finishes, including 30 over the past five seasons. On top of that, she led the program to a pair of second-place finishes in the ASUN Championship in 2016, 2017, and 2019, signifying the best finishes in program history. She was named the ASUN Coach of the Year in 2015-16 and has guided FGCU to some of its best statistical seasons in program history

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 84 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13 seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 38 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women's basketball (No. 24, 2019-20) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.46 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 22 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall and 2020 Spring semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
