Trio Among Top 10 as Men’s Golf Remains Third at Furman Intercollegiate

Jon Hopkins and Brady Madsen tied for fourth, Van Holmgren jumps into tie for sixth.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – After day two of the Furman Intercollegiate, the FGCU men's golf team remains in third place with sophomore Jon Hopkins (Bishop's Stortford, England/Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) and junior Brady Madsen (Raymond, Minn./MacCray HS/Winona State) both tied for fourth. Senior Van Holmgren (Plymouth, Minn./Waysata HS/North Dakota State) jumped 23 spots on Saturday moving into a tie for sixth.

The Eagles shot the second lowest team score of the second round with a 282 for a 36-hole score of 572. Both Wofford (second place) and Chattanooga (fourth place) shot 281 on Saturday for the day's low team score. FGCU sits just four strokes behind Wofford and six strokes behind first place Furman.

"Coach Schultz and I are really proud of the team today," said head coach Andrew Danna. "It was not an easy day with the conditions; they stayed patient to finish under par on the day as a team. We are expecting more weather tomorrow, so hopefully we'll get an opportunity to finish the 54-hole tournament."

Hopkins and Madsen are tied for fourth with a two-day score of 141, while Holmgren is just one stroke behind (142).

Holmgren shot 68 to finish three under on Saturday to vault up into the top-10. He had just one hole over par while carding four birdies on the day. After a bogey on No. 7, he finished the round with 11 holes at par-or-better.

Hopkins posted an eagle, the second of the weekend for FGCU, on No. 2 and went into the turn at one under. Back-to-back bogeys on No. 12 and No. 13 pushed him back to even, but a birdie on No. 14 followed by four pars gave him a one-under 70 for the day.

Madsen had a strong back nine after finishing the front at two over. He carded a bogey on No. 10, but birdies on No. 14, No. 15, and No. 17 gave him an even finish with a score of 71.

Freshman Thomas Salanito (Palm Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic), playing as an individual, sits tied for 24th as he shot a 72 on the day with four birdies in the round.

Sophomore Frankie Capan III (North Oaks, Minn./Northwest Christian HS/Alabama) finished the day tied for 44th after shooting 73, while junior Henry Tschopp (Rapperswil-Jona, Switzerland/Western Texas College/Dodge City CC) heads into the third round tied for 61st after carding a 76 on Saturday.

The Eagles will open the third round at 9 AM off holes No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 in a shotgun start.

Following the weekend trip to South Carolina, the Eagles will host the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate at the Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero on April 12-13.

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 85 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 13+ seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just nine seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 40 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Eight FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport - including women's basketball (No. 21, 2020-21), beach volleyball (No. 20, 2021) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.50 GPA in the classroom in the fall 2020 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for 23 consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall, 2020 Spring, and 2020 Fall semesters each saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 - being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
