FORT MYERS, FL – The FGCU women's tennis team (2-4) travels north this weekend to take on Georgia Southern on Friday at 2 p.m. and Mercer on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Green and Blue
The Eagles are coming off a tough battle last weekend as they fell to USF, 5-2. Despite the narrow loss, four of the six singles matches all went to a third set tiebreaker.
Satomi Momose (Tokyo, Japan/St. Petersburg) produced a 6-4, 7-5 triumph on court No. 2, while
Alba Retortillo (Leon,Spain/ La Anunciata) claimed a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win on court No. 5. Momose enters this weekend with a 4-2 overall record as Retortillo goes in with a 4-1 record.
Georgia Southern
GSU is 4-1 overall this spring, falling only to then No. 18-ranked Texas A&M. Sophomore Mila Hartig and freshman Paula Hijos are each 4-1 this year on their respective courts. In doubles action Hartig and Arianne De Winter are 1-0 on the top court.
The all-time series is tied 1-1, with FGCU wining the last matchup at home in 2017, 7-0.
Mercer
The Bears are 3-5 overall in 2020, led by Lauren Rich and Alara Holyfield who have each collected three wins apiece in singles play. In doubles action, Maeva Roquebert and Mary Courville are 3-3 in the No. 1 slot.
FGCU leads the all-time series 7-0.
Up Next
The Green and Blue return home Friday, Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. against No. 2 FSU which is the start of a seven-match home stand through the month of March.

HEAD COACH COURTNEY VERNON
FGCU's women's tennis team is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year Courtney Vernon (entering 7th season)
who led the Eagles to back-to-back ASUN regular-season crowns in her fifth season in 2018. She has mentored her student-athletes into earning 59 ASUN All-Conference and All-Academic honors, including 2014, 2016 and 2017 ASUN Freshman of the Year as well as the 2016, 2017 and 2019 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2018 Player of the Year. Vernon has led the Green and Blue to a 74-54 overall record (.582) and 31-8 conference record (.795).

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 81 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 12-plus seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just eight-plus seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 36 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women's basketball (2019-20) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.35 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2018 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for twenty-one consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall semester saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
