Women’s Tennis Hits the Road to Face USF

The USF match is the start of a three-match road stretch for the Eagles.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Women's tennis team is on the road this weekend, facing the USF Bulls in Tampa, Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The Green and Blue
The Eagles are coming off a very strong 6-1 performance win against FAMU last weekend. The team claimed five of the six singles matches including each doubles match. Alba Retortillo (Leon,Spain/ La Anunciata) officially clinched the match at 4-0 as she collected her third win in singles play for the season on court No. 4. She is now 3-1 overall entering this weekend.

USF
The Bulls are 2-3 so far in 2020. They collected their wins at home versus Cornell (7-0) and ASUN foe Stetson (5-2). Sophomore Amelia Boy has been leading the team at No. 1 singles spot in four of the five matches and together with her partner Alexandra Mjios, they've collected a pair of victories at the No. 1 doubles spot.

Despite USF taking the last two of three matches, they've all been decided by three points or less. In 2017, FGCU claimed a 5-2 triumph at home.

The Green and Blue will be going to Georgia the following weekend, facing Georgia Southern on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m .and Mercer on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m.

HEAD COACH COURTNEY VERNON
FGCU's women's tennis team is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year Courtney Vernon (entering 7th season) who led the Eagles to back-to-back ASUN regular-season crowns in her fifth season in 2018. She has mentored her student-athletes into earning 59 ASUN All-Conference and All-Academic honors, including 2014, 2016 and 2017 ASUN Freshman of the Year as well as the 2016, 2017 and 2019 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2018 Player of the Year. Vernon has led the Green and Blue to a 74-53 overall record (.582) and 31-8 conference record (.795).

ABOUT FGCU
FGCU teams have combined to win an incredible 80 conference regular season and tournament titles in just 12-plus seasons at the Division I level. Additionally, in just eight-plus seasons of D-I postseason eligibility, the Eagles have had a combined 36 teams or individuals compete in NCAA championships. Seven FGCU programs have earned a top-25 national ranking in their respective sport – including women's basketball (2019-20) and both men's soccer (2018, 2019) and women's soccer (2018) as three of the most recent. In 2016-17, the Green and Blue posted a department-best sixth-place finish in the DI-AAA Learfield Directors' Cup and top-100 showing nationally, ahead of several Power-5 and FBS institutions. In 2018-19, the Eagles had an ASUN and state of Florida best seven teams earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for their Academic Progress Rate in their sport. FGCU also collectively earned a record 3.35 GPA in the classroom in the spring 2018 semester and has outperformed the general University undergraduate population for twenty-one consecutive semesters. The 2019 Fall semester saw another milestone reached as all 15 programs achieved a 3.0-or-higher team GPA. The Eagles also served an all-time high 7,200 volunteer hours in 2017 – being recognized as one of two runners-up for the inaugural NACDA Community Service Award presented by the Fiesta Bowl.
