Eagles prepare to close non-conference schedule against Brown

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men's tennis team (6-8, 2-0 ASUN) will take on Brown (7-5, 0-0 Ivy) at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 28 at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

"This is our last non-conference match on the year and it's a great opportunity for us to host an Ivy League school," head coach CJ Weber said. "Brown has had a good year so far, so we are anticipating another battle."

Last Time Out
•     The Green and Blue earned its second ASUN win of the season with a clean, 7-0 sweep over NJIT last Saturday at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
•     A strong showing in doubles play handed the Eagles an early 1-0 edge. Juan Montes (Pereira, Colombia) and Marcelo Tebet (Londrina, Brazil/Colégio Anglo Americano) defeated their NJIT competitors 6-2 on court two. Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) and Feliksas Sakalauskas (Palanga, Lithuania/Virginia Tech) sealed the point with a victory by the same margin at the third flight.
•     Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) extended his current winning streak to three with a straight-set triumph on court six. Sakalauskas followed up immediately with a straight-set victory of his own at the fifth flight.
•     Ramirez clinched the match for the Eagles with a 6-2, 6-1 win at court two, snapping his NJIT competitor's three-match winning streak.
•     Tebet and Montes each claimed straight-set victories at courts four and one, respectively.
•     Felipe Escobar (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira/TCU) sealed the sweep for the Green and Blue with a tiebreak victory in his second set at the third flight.

Scouting the Bears
•     This will be the second meeting between the two programs.
•     The teams first met at the FGCU Tennis Complex in 2011, a 6-1 victory for the Bears.
•     Brown is currently on a two-match skid after dropping decisions at Loyola Marymount (4-3) and at the Eagles' ASUN foe UNF (5-2).
•     The Bears are undefeated on their home courts, but have a 1-2 record on the road.
•     The duo of senior Charles Tan and freshman Roger Chau is currently ranked No. 78 in the ITA doubles rankings and owns a 5-4 record this spring.
•     Brown has posted three shutout victories this season. The Bears blanked St. John's (4-0), Binghamton (7-0) and William & Mary (4-0). The team has been on the opposite end of a shutout just once, a 4-0 loss at Virginia Tech.

Up Next
The Eagles will get in to the heart of their conference season with a three-match road swing, starting at Stetson (9-8, 1-1 ASUN) on Saturday, March 30. The meeting with the Hatters is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. Stetson currently holds a 10-5 advantage in the history between the two schools.

CJ WEBER
FGCU is led by CJ Weber, who has coached 29 ASUN All-Conference selections since joining the Green and Blue in 2011. In his seventh year, Weber has compiled an 88-76 (.536) overall record and a 33-18 (.647) record in ASUN play. In 2014-15, Weber guided the Eagles to their first-ever ASUN Championship and first-ever ASUN Regular Season title after a program-best 17 wins. In his third season, Weber led Jordi Vives to a No. 35 national ranking, a nation-leading 14-match unbeaten streak and the round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament - the program's first appearance. The Eagles completed consecutive perfect ASUN seasons in 2016 and back-to-back conference titles as well as a second-straight Coach of the Year honor for Weber. FGCU again won the ASUN Championship in 2017, advancing to its second NCAA appearance in program history.
