Eagles put together strong showing at ITA Regionals

Both FGCU doubles teams reach the round of 16

FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles put both doubles teams into the round of 16 and all four singles players competed in a solid week for the Blue and Green at the ITA Southeast Regionals in Atlanta.

The Eagles had a big week in the doubles bracket where they earned three wins over power four opponents. Stefan Correa and Hugo Magnusson got things going with an 8-4 win over USF in their first match as a pair and advanced to the round of 16 with an 8-6 victory over Georgia on Friday. Saturday, they came up just short of making it to the quarterfinals, battling Georgia Tech to the end before eventually coming up just short 8-6 to end their week. Jonathan Baron and Tanner Povey also put together a good showing, grinding out an 8-7 (3) win over Georgia Tech in their first match after a first-round bye and moved onto the round of 16 following a walkover win over Florida in the third round. They pushed UCF to a tiebreak in the round of 16, but fell in an 8-7 (5) decision to bring their tournament to a close.

Correa earned the Eagles first win in singles action as he downed Konstantinos Megalemos in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 to advance in the qualifying draw. He came up just short of punching his ticket to the main draw, dropping a 7-6 (3), 6-4 decision to Georgia's James Weber to bring his week to an end.

Povey and Baron earned first round byes in the qualifying bracket, but weren't able to advance after Povey was tripped up by Andreas Messis of UNF 6-3, 6-4 and Baron's tourney was ended with a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Dominic Ducariu in the second round.

Magnusson was the lone Eagle to start in the main draw and he earned a dominating 6-0, 6-3 victory over Billion Sharp of FAU in his first match before falling in a three setter to Gabriele Vulpitta of Georgia to finish off his week.

Overall the Eagles earned six wins on the week going 4-2 in doubles play and 2-5 in singles action.

The Eagles now prepare for a pair of de facto home tournaments to close out their fall schedule, first taking part in the Pelican Bay Collegiate Invite October 30-November 1 before competing in the Bonita Bay Collegiate Open November 6-8 in Bonita Springs.
