FORT MYERS, FL – The No. 50 FGCU women's tennis team (4-3) is set to host conference rival UNF at 5 pm Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Last Time Out
FGCU collected a 4-3 win on the road against Houston on Feb. 15. The Eagles claimed a 1-0 lead after taking two of the three doubles matches and jumped ahead 3-0 following wins on courts No. 1 and No. 2. The home side battled back to take the next three matches but junior
Sofia Perez (Alajuela, Costa Rica/Florida Virtual School) clinched on the final point for the Eagles, claiming a 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 decision for the triumph.
ITA Top-50 Ranking
In the latest installment of the ITA/Oracle Women's Rankings released Tuesday, the Eagles came in at No. 50. It marked the first time in program history the Green and Blue received a spot inside the top-50. A total of four teams in the Sunshine State were listed in the poll as No. 15 FSU, No. 19 Miami and No. 43 Florida were among those recognized.
ASUN Preseason Poll
The back-to-back ASUN regular-season champion Eagles collected 52 points and one first-place vote in the ASUN Coaches Poll released back in January. Atop the poll, conference newcomer Liberty and UNF each garnered 57 points apiece for a first-place tie. The Ospreys came away with four first-place votes compared to the Flames' three.
Lipscomb (37) was selected to finish fourth in the poll, ahead of Stetson (35) and NJIT (24). Kennesaw State (18) and the ASUN's second newcomer team this year North Alabama (8) rounded out the poll.
Scouting the Ospreys
UNF will enter Fort Myers with a 4-6 overall record after defeating Bethune-Cookman 4-0 Thursday afternoon. Overall in doubles play, the tandem of Rafaela Gomez ad Constanza Gorches are 6-2 in dual play on the top court. Meanwhile in singles action. Gomez holds a 1-3 record on court No. 1 as Lucia Montano is 3-0 on court No. 2.
ASUN Success
The Eagles continue to march ahead under the guidance of head coach
Courtney Vernon in her sixth season at the helm. A three-time ASUN Coach of the Year, the Green and Blue have posted a 27-5 record over conference foes under Vernon.
Matchup History
Prior to last season, the Eagles and the Ospreys had met in three-straight ASUN Championship finals (2015-2017). Each of their last five meetings has been decided by two points or less as FGCU has claimed the last two regular-season matches 4-3.

HEAD COACH COURTNEY VERNON
FGCU's women's tennis team is led by three-time ASUN Coach of the Year Courtney Vernon, who led the Eagles to back-to-back ASUN regular-season crowns in her fifth season in 2018. She has mentored her student-athletes into earning 56 ASUN All-Conference and All-Academic honors, including 2014, 2016 and 2017 ASUN Freshman of the Year as well as the 2016 and 2017 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the 2018 Player of the Year. Vernon has led the Green and Blue to a 65-45 overall record (.592) and 27-5 conference record (.827) in her six years at FGCU.
