FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU volleyball team (14-3, 4-1 ASUN) will host a pair of conference matches this weekend, highlighted by a potential first-place showdown with Kennesaw State (11-5, 4-0) on Sunday at 2 p.m. Those two teams have split the past two ASUN tournament championships with the Eagles winning a five-set thriller last year. First, however, the Green and Blue will have to match up against Jacksonville (7-11, 3-1) on Friday night at 7 p.m.

On Friday, the marketing department will be promoting Cancer Awareness Night with all fans encouraged to wear pink. There will be "together we're stronger than cancer" t-shirts available for $15. On Sunday, fans are encouraged to wear white or beach gear as part of "Beach Bash in The Nest." Fans are encouraged to come early to attend the women's soccer match on Sunday, where senior day recognition will start around 12:30 p.m. Further, fans can attend both events that day for the price of one if you show the ticket stub from the other event.

SERIES HISTORY
FGCU has won 15 of 25 all-time matchups against Kennesaw State with victories in the past two, both of which came on the road. They own a 7-3 record at home, and the Owls have taken the past two in Alico Arena. Meanwhile, the Green and Blue are 18-11 all-time against Jacksonville with wins in three straight and seven of the past eight in the series, including wins in nine consecutive sets. FGCU is 9-4 in Alico Arena against the Dolphins.

HIGHEST RPI
Earlier this week, the FGCU volleyball team checked in at No. 44 in the season's first official RPI rankings, which was the highest in program history - just ahead of their 47th-place finish in last year's final rankings.

GREEN AND BLUE NOTES
Cortney VanLiew is on a streak of consistency seen only two other times in program history. The junior outside hitter has recorded 15 consecutive matches with at least 10 or more kills, tying a program-record streak currently also held by Eleonora Kazarian (Sept. 20 - Nov. 7, 2014) and Ana Kokanovic from Oct. 4 - Nov. 15, 2008.

VanLiew (Seymour, Ind./Columbus East HS), who is one of just three players in program history to achieve at least 1,000 kills and 500 digs in a career, had a previous career-high streak of 10 last year. The program's all-time kills leader, Amanda Carroll, reached a career-best streak of 13 straight in 2016, while Brooke Youngquist Sweat had 10 straight from Sept. 9 - Oct. 14, 2006.

Dana Axner (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman HS), meanwhile, has notched 10 straight matches with double-digit digs, and she's had 10 or more in 16 of 17 overall this year. She already has 303 digs this year, which is just two shy of being a top 20 single-season total in the program's Division I era and slightly ahead of her single-season program record total of 624 last year.

The sophomore libero had a season-high 29 digs, along with three aces, in the team's win over Stetson this past Saturday. She had 25 of those digs through the first three sets along while achieving a new conference career-high. It was also the most-ever in a four-set ASUN match and the fifth-most in a regular season conference match of any length in program history.

Daniele Serrano not only recorded nine kills on Saturday to move into sixth place on the program's career kills list, but she also tied Olivia Mesner's (62, 2011-14) career solo blocks record on Friday. Both players have the same total, but Serrano (Sanford, Fla./Seminole HS) has recorded her output in 34 fewer sets.

The senior middle blocker already owns the career program records for block assists (355) and total blocks (417), and she needs six more blocks to move into third place on the ASUN's all-time career list.

1. Meredith Hardy (ETSU, 2010-13) - 474.0
2. Morgan Van Alstine (North Florida, 2013-16) - 435.0
3. Rachel Templin (Campbell, 2003-06) - 422.0
4. Daniele Serrano (FGCU, 2016-present) - 417.0
5. Danielle Neville (Jacksonville, 2002-05) - 408.0

Sophomore setter Chelsey Lockey is averaging 11.34 assists per set, which is on track to be the third-best single-season average in program history behind Gigi Meyer (11.55, 2014) and Maggie Rick (11.36, 2017). She has totaled at least 20 assists in every match this year and 32 or more in 15 of 17. On top of that, she already has five double-doubles and three matches with at least 50 assists this year.

Other notable top performers recently include: Erin Shomaker (Granville, Ohio/Granville HS), who has three straight matches with at least nine kills and recorded a season-high six digs on Saturday against Stetson; Snowy Burnam (Palm City, Fla./Jensen Beach HS), who had a season-high 17 kills along with nine digs against Stetson in what was her fourth match with at least 10 kills this year; Tori Morris (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam HS), who has had at least four block assists in three straight and seven matches overall this year; and Carroll (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS), who has had at least six digs in four of the past six matches and ranks among the top 10 in the conference on service aces.

Looking Ahead
After this weekend, the Green and Blue will hit the road on Oct. 16 to take on Florida International. The team then returns home Oct. 19 for a conference tilt against NJIT at 7 p.m.

COACH BOTSFORD
Matt Botsford is in his sixth season as head coach of the FGCU women's volleyball program in 2019 after being hired on Feb. 10, 2014. In his tenure, Botsford-led teams have compiled a 130-48 (.730) record overall, including a 61-16 (.792) record in ASUN play. Including this past season, he has taken the program to heights it has not seen in the Division-I era (2007-present) – registering at least 20 wins overall in four straight seasons and at least 10 wins in conference play five straight seasons. Furthermore, the team's offensive efficiency has drastically improved since Botsford started. In his first two seasons, his squad produced hitting percentages of .212 and .220. The next two, which saw .267 and .256 percentages, are the third and fourth highest in program history. In 2018, he led the program to its first regular season championship since 2012 (fourth overall) and its first-ever ASUN tournament title, NCAA tournament appearance, NCAA tournament win and victory over a ranked team. His first two campaigns resulted in ASUN regular season runner-up finishes, and the following two saw the Eagles advance to the tournament championship. On Sept. 10, 2016, Botsford led his team to a five-set win over Indiana in Alico Arena, which signified the program's first-ever win over a team from a Power-5 conference. This past season, he led the team to a win over Miami (Fla.) - the program's first-ever road Power-5 win.
