FORT MYERS, Fla. - The No. 25 FGCU women's basketball team (21-4, 7-1 ASUN) will look to avenge its only ASUN loss when they host North Florida (10-13, 3-5 ASUN) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Alico Arena.
The game also signifies the 600th in the collegiate coaching career for
Karl Smesko, and it will see the return of
Tytionia Adderly, who missed the past two games due to injury.
THE GREEN AND BLUE
FGCU avoided its first two-game losing streak in ASUN play since January 2009 with its win over Jacksonville on Saturday. In doing so, the Eagles regained sole possession of first place in the conference with six games remaining.
The first of those six will come Tuesday against a North Florida team that knocked off FGCU 75-73 last Thursday to snap a 17-game winning streak in the series and a 10-game winning streak this year.
Last week, FGCU moved up to No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. It was the first time the program was ranked in either major poll since April 2015. The Eagles are now 9-2 in games while ranked and remain No. 1 in the CollegeInsider.com and espnW mid-major polls.
Taylor Gradinjan (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy HS), who eclipsed 1,100 career points against Lipscomb and now has 1,133, needs three more to pass
Stephanie Haas (1135, 2012-16) for seventh most all-time, and she's currently played two fewer career games than Haas. Last Thursday, she passed
Katie Meador (135, 2012-16) for sole possession of third most games played all-time, and she is four starts shy of passing
Adrianne McNally (118, 2006-10) for second most. Additionally, Gradinjan passed
Kelsey Jacobson (385, 2008-12) for seventh place in field goals made (390), and she now has 976 field goal attempts - 13 shy of eclipsing
Kelsey Jacobson (988, 2008-12) for sixth most all-time. On top of all that, Gradinjan is the most experienced active player in Division-I women's basketball with her 137 games - two more than UConn's Gabby Williams.
Adderly (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS), who returns after missing nearly three full games due to injury, is just 17 rebounds shy of eclipsing Gradinjan (464) for seventh most on the career list. She's just two offensive rebounds shy of passing
Kaneisha Atwater (186, 2013-16) for sixth all-time.
Julien (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Treasure Coast HS) is shooting .816 from the line in her career, which is just shy of
Kelsey Jacobson (.819, 2008-12) for the best mark in program history. She eclipsed 700 career points last Thursday with her 22-point outburst and now sits at 707 in just 59 career games.
China Dow (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy of Louisville) also eclipsed a career scoring milestone last week. With her 24 points in the win over Jacksonville, she moved past 900 and now sits at 920.
Erica Nelson (Kansas City, Mo./Lee Summit North HS) eclipsed 500 in her career after her 16-point effort against North Florida. She now has 515. On top of that,
Lisa Zderadicka (Vienna, Austria/HAK Korneuburg) now has 713 points in her career after a season-high 15 points against Jacksonville.
FGCU features the ASUN's top scoring and rebounding sophomores.
Nasrin Ulel (Murrietta, Calif./Murrietta HS) averages 10.0 points, while Adderly averages 8.4 rebounds. In fact, Adderly also leads all sophomores in steals at 1.7 per contest.
Smesko will coach his 600th career game against North Florida in his 19th season overall. He is 486-113 (.811) overall, and he's in his 16th season at FGCU.
SCOUTING NORTH FLORIDA
North Florida (10-13, 3-5 ASUN) will enter Tuesday coming off a 68-51 loss to Stetson, but the Ospreys defeated FGCU 75-73 on Feb. 1 behind a game-high 28 points from Keonna Farmer. In that game, they made a season-high eight 3-pointers on just 11 attempts to knock off the Eagles.
Farmer leads North Florida with 17.2 points and eight rebounds per game. Tesh Hanson is second on the team in scoring at 11.8 per contest, while Tiffany Tolbert (8.7) and Adrienne Jackson (8.4) are the next two in line. Hanson also averages seven rebounds, while Ty Purifoy averages a team-high 3.4 assists. Farmer leads the team with 2.5 steals per game.

COACH SMESKO
FGCU head coach Karl Smesko rallied the 2016-17 Eagles to their seventh-straight 25-win campaign, which culminated in the team's fourth NCAA tournament appearance in six seasons of eligibility. The seven-time ASUN Coach of the Year was named the espnW Mid-Major Coach of the Year in 2015-16 following a run that witnessed the Eagles finish a best-ever 33-6. Over a five-year stretch starting in 2011-12, FGCU racked up four ASUN seasons with a perfect record and capped the run with back-to-back 30 plus win seasons. In 2014-15, the team earned its first top-25 ranking and another NCAA Tournament trip as a seven seed, where FGCU won its first ever NCAA Division-I Tournament game against No. 10 Oklahoma State. Including this year, Smesko has guided the Eagles to 14-straight 20-win seasons. He maintains a record of 425-86 (.832) at FGCU, including a 164-16 (.911) mark in ASUN play. Over the past six + seasons, he has guided FGCU to a 100-4 (.962) record in conference play with four undefeated seasons. Smesko earned his 400th career coaching win in 2014-15 in just 493 career games, two games faster than UConn's Geno Auriemma. He holds a career head coaching record of 486-113 (.811). Smesko ranks among an elite list of just four active Division I coaches with a career win percentage of .800 or higher, joining Auriemma, Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer in the esteemed group.
