Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla. – An energetic and clinical performance on the courts led to a dominant 7-0 victory for the FGCU men's tennis team Saturday over Georgia Southern. The Eagles (1-4) fed off the energy of more than 200 fans at the FGCU Tennis Complex as the Green and Blue made their 2018 home debut with a victory over the visiting Eagles (0-5).
"Today was a great day for us," said head coach
CJ Weber. "We implemented the exact attitude we are looking to exude throughout the entire season. Our crowd was absolutely incredible tonight. I want to thank all our fans for these moments that make it so special to be here at FGCU, for the players and myself. We're looking forward to our next challenge against FAU."
Strong performances across the board gave FGCU more than just hope as the Green and Blue searched for their first win of the season. A quick doubles session secured the doubles point in just 35 minutes before three singles wins wrapped up FGCU's win in less than two hours.
Oliver Landert (Naples, Fla./Florida Virtual School/Florida) and
Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) set the tone for the entire night, producing a dominant 6-2 win over Artemie Amari and Eddie Landin at No. 1 doubles. While both courts 2 and 3 led for the most of match,
Felipe Escobar (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira/TCU) and
Austin Bates (Marietta, Ga./Pope HS) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 over Diego Finkelstein and Murphy McCullough. Just as court 2 finished,
Mateo Ruiz (Bucaramanga, Colombia/Oklahoma State) and
Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB) fell 6-4 on court 3 to Stefano Di Aloy and Pascal Wagemaker.
FGCU's vocal leader Bates was the first off the courts in singles play, finishing off Carlos Garcia 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. Not long after, Landert celebrated a 6-1, 6-1 win over Landin at No. 2 just before Fernandez clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Wagemaker.
FGCU and Georgia Southern finished out the match as the Green and Blue continued to impress. Ramirez and Ruiz finished almost simultaneously. The sophomore Ramirez fought off Di Aloy 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 1 and as he celebrated, Ruiz secured a 7-6, 6-0 victory at No. 4 over McCullough.
In the final match of the night, Escobar won a hard-fought 7-6, 7-5 match at No. 3 over Finkelstein. Â
