ATLANTA, GA – After clinching its seventh regular-season title in program history last weekend, the FGCU men's soccer team had six players named to the ASUN postseason teams on Thursday, highlighted by senior
Preston Kilwien being named the unanimous Defensive Player of the Year.
In addition, two more Eagles took home superlative awards as
Gustavo Vasconcelos was named the Goalkeeper of the Year and
O'Vonte Mullings nabbing Freshman of the Year honors.
Shak Adams joined the trio on the ASUN First Team as
Kamar Marriott landed a spot on the ASUN Second Team. Meanwhile, Mullings and
Ethan Dudley snagged ASUN All-Freshmen Team honors. The Green and Blue have now produced at least two All-Freshmen performers in 12 straight seasons.
"We look at these individual honors as team awards," said head coach
Jesse Cormier. "If the team does well, most of the squad gets recognized. But in many cases, the guys who aren't recognized are the ones who deserve much of the credit by their excellent support during games and increasing the challenge in training."
23 Kilwien (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park HS)
Installed as the Preseason ASUN Defensive Player of the Year, Kilwien now becomes the fourth member in the program history to take home the end of the year honors as he was voted a unanimous choice. He joins
Nicolas Samayoa (2017), Aaron Guillen (2015) and Adam Glick (2010).
A staple on the FGCU backline, the senior has started each of the Eagle's 15 matches this season, logging in more than 1,330 minutes on the pitch – one of four players in the ASUN with over 1,300 minutes played, not including keepers. Throughout his tenure dawning the Green and Blue, Kilwien has tallied four goals to go along with five assists for a career point total of 15.
"Preston has improved immeasurably since I arrived a year and a half ago," added Cormier. "He's focused on his academics, becoming a much more consistent player and most importantly, has developed as a fine leader. He now demands excellence from the guys around him, always starting with himself. So happy to see his personal reflections make a difference for him in his life and the support he gives and receives from his fellow defenders and teammates."
1 Vasconcelos (Recife, Brazil/Colegio GGE)
After utilizing a redshirt last season, Vasconcelos turned in a stellar 2018 regular-season campaign. Overall, the Brazil native went 8-3-1 as he led the league in save percentage (.839) and goals against average (0.84). In total, Vasconcelos has started 12 contests between the posts for FGCU, securing 56 saves while recording three shutouts. Furthermore, the sophomore was named ASUN Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions during the month of September (Sept. 10 and 24). He becomes the first keeper since Nathan Ingham (2015) to receive the award.
"Gustavo is a great example for all young soccer players and athletes in general," stated Cormier. "He is one of the hardest working players I've seen. He rarely takes a day off, always searching to improve aspects of his life, and his art (goalkeeping). He listens, reads, and is a sponge in the relentless process of self-improvement. Gustavo is an example for anyone looking on what to do to become an exceptional person and player. I couldn't be more excited for him, his position coach
Ian Spooner and our team (defense) to have him as an award winner."
21 Mullings (Toronto, Ontario/ Northview Heights Secondary)
The newcomer made his presence felt early on in this season as he was named the ASUN Player of the week after FGCU's first two matches. In 15 games this year, Mullings has started 13 of them, going on to score seven goals thus far – second on the team – while also dishing out four helpers en route to a total of 18 points also good for second on the team. The Ontario native is the first player to earn Freshman of the Year honors since Isaiah Madrid captured such in 2013 the fourth Eagle overall in program history.
"O'Vonte is young, but he exhibits a maturity beyond his years," said Cormier. "He knows how to work, press and do the less glamorous things for our team to be successful. He's off to a great start here at FGCU but there is much more potential for him to realize and work towards as a member of our attack and team."
17 Adams (Antioch, Tenn./Cane Ridge HS)
Adams – now a two-time ASUN First teamer – has spearheaded the FGCU attack all season tallying team-highs in goals (eight, three game-winners), assists (eight) and points (24). In five conference games this year, the Tennessee native has produced four goals and assists apiece which are good for second in the ASUN. Out of 15 matches, he's started all but one, taking 27 shots with 16 coming on goal.
He was named the ASUN Player of the Week on Sept. 17 following his hat-trick performance against USF in the 5-3 win.
25 Marriott (Tampa, Fla./Heritage)
After missing the 2017 season, Marriot was named to the ASUN Second Team after starting 13 of 14 matches this season. The versatile defender/midfielder is one of four players (not including keepers) to record more than 1000 minutes. This season, the Tampa native recorded a game-winning goal on the road versus Georgia Southern as he's fired off five shots with three coming on frame.
28 Dudley (Jacksonville, Fla./Bartram Trail)
Dudley joins Mullings on the ASUN All-Freshmen Team to give the Eagles two or more All-Conference Freshmen performers for a 12th-straight season. The Jacksonville native has logged over 450 minutes this season, starting four contests while appearing in 10. The newcomer defender has come on strong as of late, starting the last two games on the backline which has conceded one goal during that stretch.
