FORT MYERS, Fla. – One match remains for the FGCU men's tennis team in the 2017 regular season and it sees FGCU welcome #34 Memphis to Fort Myers as the Eagles prepare for the ASUN Tournament.
The Eagles and Tigers are set to start at 6 p.m. at the FGCU Tennis Complex. All matches are free and open to the public but seating is limited and fans are encouraged to bring their own seats.
SENIOR SENDOFF
Saturday marks the final regular season contest for
Andres Alfonzo (Hollywood, Fla./Florida Virtual School/Texas Christian University) and
Sam Chaffin (Tampa, Fla./Wharton HS). Both Eagles, along with 2016 graduate
Chris Perrigan will be honored between doubles and singles.
THE GREEN AND BLUE
FGCU concluded ASUN Conference play, splitting its final two matches. Following a tough 4-3 loss to Kennesaw State that saw the Eagles come back from 3-0 down to tie the match at 3-3, the Green and Blue defeated Lipscomb 5-2. The win over the Bisons secured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming ASUN Tournament.
With the Eagles and Bisons tied at 2-2, Alfonzo secured an important victory at No. 4 allowing
Felipe Ramirez (Armenia, Colombia/Florida Virtual School) to clinch the match win at No. 1, defeating #118 Rob Mitchell.
In just his first season of college tennis, Ramirez has been an important piece of the team this year, posting nine wins this spring. The freshman shares the team lead with last season's Freshman of the Year
Javier Fernandez (Ibiza, Spain/IES CTEIB).
ASUN TOURNAMENT
The Eagles and Kennesaw State are the only two teams that have guaranteed their seed in next week's tournament. The Eagles will enter as the No. 4 while the Owls are the No. 3 seed while the top two seeds and final two seeds have yet to be finalized. FGCU is slated to face the No. 5 seed in the tournament, which could be NJIT, Lipscomb, or USC Upstate.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Headlined by a pair of nationally ranked singles players, Memphis comes to Fort Myers as the #34 team in the country with a 13-6 overall record. Ryan Peniston has featured at four different positions and has posted a winning record at every one. With a 23-8 record this season, Peniston finds himself at #79 in the NCAA. Leading the way with 26 wins this season, Andrew Watson carries a #105 ranking into Saturday's finale. Watson is 8-5 at No. 2 and 6-3 at No. 3 this season.
The doubles pairings for Memphis have been tough to beat this season, beginning at the top. Connor Glennon and Kai Lemke have been stellar at No. 1, posting a 12-5 record from the top position. Louis Asser and Watson are not far behind with a 10-6 record at No. 2.
Saturday will be the first dual meet between the Eagles and Tigers.
UP NEXT
The Eagles enter the ASUN Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play Friday at 5 p.m. with the winner advancing to play the No. 1 overall seed.
CJ WEBER
FGCU is led by
CJ Weber who has coached 23 ASUN All-Conference selections since joining the Green and Blue in 2011. In his fifth year, Weber has compiled a 71-54 (.600) overall record and a 29-14 (.694) record in ASUN play. In 2014-15, Weber guided the Eagles to their first-ever Atlantic Sun Championship and first-ever Atlantic Sun Regular Season title after a program-best 17 wins. In his third season, Weber led Jordi Vives to a No. 35 national ranking, a nation-leading 14-match unbeaten streak and the round of 32 in the 2014 NCAA Tournament - the program's first appearance. The Eagles completed consecutive perfect ASUN seasons in 2016 and back-to-back conference titles as well as a second-straight Coach of the Year honor for Weber.
