FORT MYERS Fla. – The FGCU women's tennis team (10-7, 4-0 A-Sun) extended its season-long win streak to five matches with its third straight 7-0 shutout, this one coming against USC Upstate (0-17, 0-3 A-Sun) Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Tennis Complex.
Â
With the win, the Green and Blue remained perfect in conference play, matching their 4-0 start from a season ago, and have now tallied the most wins in a regular season since going 13-6 during the 2013-14 regular season.
Â
"The girls competed very well again today," said FGCU head coach
Courtney Vernon. "We're grateful to get the win and are looking forward to competing against UNF on Thursday."
Â
Julia Ascúa (Santa Fe, Argentina/Domingo G. Silva) and
Julianna Curtis (Tampa, Fla./Allendale Academy) continued to impress in the No. 2 position with a 6-1 win against Upstate's Anna Zoske and Ruby Kubac. It was the duo's fifth straight win as they improved to 11-2 overall and 10-1 in No. 2 doubles.
Â
Shortly after,
Elizabeth Means (Washington, D.C./Wiregrass Ranch HS) and
Alexandra Landert (Zurich, Switzerland/Seton Hall), who returned to the courts for the first time since the end of February, registered a 6-3 win against Anna Nemeth and Meredith McGee in the No. 3 position to claim the cumulative point.
Â
Almost momentarily, FGCU's top tandem of
Breana Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) and
Joselyn Treyes Albarracin (Guayaquil, Ecuador/InterAmerican Academy) won by the same margin against Carol Sigaki and Vale Zarama.
Â
Much like their match on Thursday, the Eagles maintained the early momentum from doubles play and won each of the six singles matches in straight sets.
Â
Laura Falceto Font (Zaragoza, Spain/El Pilar Maristas Zaragoza) won her second consecutive match in straight points with a 6-0, 6-0 win against McGee, marking her eighth straight win as she improved to 9-1 in the No. 6 position.
Â
Means then kept the Eagles hot streak going with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Kubac in the No. 5 position to bring FGCU within a point of improving to 4-0 in conference play, before Treyes Albarracin clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win in No. 2 singles.
Â
With the match already decided, Curtis registered a 6-1, 6-0 win in No. 4 singles, before Stampfli won by a 6-4, 6-0 margin in the top spot. Then, to cap of the afternoon, Ascua pushed her win streak to seven matches with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Sigaki in the No. 3 position.
Â
Five Eagles are currently riding match win streaks of five or more and three have tallied double-digit wins during the dual-match season.
