Haas, Ventura Earn FGCU Athletics Academic Honor

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU Athletics Department has named women's basketball player Stephanie Haas and men's tennis player Ricky Ventura as recipients of the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month award for February.

Each month during the school year, the FGCU Athletics Communication Office and Athletic Academic staff will choose a pair of Eagles as the FGCU Athletics Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Those selected for the honor will have exhibited a combination of superior athletic and overall academic success.

Haas (Avon Lake, Ohio/Magnificat HS) is a double major in criminal justice and psychology and holds a 3.94 cumulative GPA during her four years at FGCU. She is a three-time member of the President's List for turning in a GPA of 4.0 during the spring 2013, spring 2014 and fall 2015 semesters and was named to the Dean's List for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the fall 2012, fall 2013, fall 2014 and spring 2015 semesters. Haas has been named to the FGCU Athletics Director's Honor Roll every semester since stepping foot on campus in 2012 and has been a FGCU Student-Athlete Academic Honors Luncheon Recipient in all three years of eligibility.

Earlier this month, the Avon Lake, Ohio, native was named the A-Sun Scholar Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season and maintained the Eagles streak of five straight award winners. Haas is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and was a member of the DI-AAA Scholar-Athlete Team last season. In addition, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Haas as the recipient of the 2016 WBCA Charles T. Stoner Law Scholarship Award, which is presented annually to one female collegiate basketball player who intends to pursue a career in law.

On the court, Haas averaged 7.1 points per game this season with 7.9 points per game in conference contests. The senior added 2.5 rebounds with 40 assists and 23 steals. Haas shot 38.4 percent from the floor and added 25 3-pointers as the Green and Blue earned its sixth-straight A-Sun Regular Championship with a perfect 14-0 record in league play. Additionally, she is a two-time A-Sun Tournament Champion and was a member of the 2014-15 team that claimed the program's first NCAA Tournament win.

Ventura (Barcelona, Spain/University of Barcelona) is a communications major with a concentration in public relations and has turned in a 3.55 cumulative GPA during his two years on the Southwest Florida campus. He is a two-time member of the Dean's List for recording a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the fall 2015 and spring 2015 semesters and, like Hass, has also been a member of the FGCU Athletic Director's Honor Roll during each semester in Fort Myers.

The Barcelona native has made an immediate impact on the FGCU men's tennis program in only his second season on campus. Playing in the No. 1 and No. 2 position as a senior this season, Ventura has tallied six singles wins to go along with six doubles wins while teaming up with Lucas Vaz in the No. 1 and No. 2 slot. As a team, FGCU ended the 2015 campaign ranked inside the ITA poll and has continued to crack the list this season, making its way as high as No. 74 in the country.

Ventura helped lead FGCU to a historic 2015 spring season during which the team earned its first A-Sun Regular Season and Tournament Championship and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Playing in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles position during the season, Ventura posted a 14-5 overall record and 4-2 conference mark before earning A-Sun All-Conference First Team honors.
