FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (30-25-1, 11-9 A-Sun) will live to fight another day after dealing Stetson (29-30, 12-9 A-Sun) a 3-2 loss in 10 innings on Friday night under the lights of Swanson Stadium in a game that was delayed until five hours after its original start time of 3 p.m. Freshman lefty Devin Smeltzer pitched, without question, the best game of his young career and it was Brady Anderson dealing the knockout blow at the plate in the top of the 10th inning to push the Eagles ahead for good. FGCU will face top-seeded North Florida (44-15, 16-5 A-Sun) tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. for the right to do battle with Lipscomb (38-18, 13-8 A-Sun) in the Championship Final.

"Tonight was just an incredible effort," head coach Dave Tollett said of the Eagles' dramatic victory. "Devin Smeltzer really showed just how good he is and can become tonight and at the plate we stranded some guys but we came up with the big hits when it mattered and at the end of the day we're still playing for a championship. Anything can happen in this tournament so for us now it's just about finding a way to survive and advance."

Smeltzer (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) was dominant from the beginning on Friday night, working through a career-high 7.1 innings on the hill while surrendering just eight hits and two runs in the no-decision. He would also strike out a career-best eight batters while throwing 103 pitches, 75 of which went for strikes. He gave way in the eighth to Jordan Desguin (Newport Beach, Cal./Newport Harbor) who completed the final 2.2 innings of this one, striking out three including the final batter of the game with a sharp breaking ball.

At the dish it was the top two hitters in the order, Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) and Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) setting the table with two hits each. Freshman outfielder Zach Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) also added two hits and scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the 10th after singling to leadoff the frame. Both Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) and Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) drove in a single run. Rivera now has 70 for the season making him just the second individual in FGCU program history to accomplish that feat. He is just four RBI's shy of tying Jason Louwsma's nine-year-old single-season record. Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) was the hero tonight in the 10th when he doubled in Spivey to give the Eagles the lead that Desguin would lock down.

FGCU was the first to strike after both starting pitchers cruised through the first two innings. With two away in the top of the third Selesky cracked a double into the gap in deep right center and Rivera followed with a walk to put two runners on for the red-hot Jake Noll. The sophomore battled back from an 0-2 count and worked it even before smoking a single to right to drive in Selesky for the first run of the ball game. Two runners would be stranded in the frame however, setting up the Stetson offense in the bottom of the third.

Smeltzer would strike out the first batter of the bottom of third before Tyler Bocock stepped to the dish and delivered his second homerun of the season to square this game, 1-1. The freshman lefty would get a ground ball for the second out but a single from the next batter put the go-ahead run on first. A stolen base put that runner in scoring position for Patrick Mazeika who worked a full count before looking at strike three to end the threat.

Selesky sent a hard-hit shot into the gap in left-center with one away in the top of the fifth to put a runner on for Rivera who turned on a first pitch fastball for a double off the wall in left. Selesky turned on the jets and circled the bags to give the Eagles the lead, 2-1. Two more runners would be stranded in the frame however but Smeltzer continued to dominate the Hatter lineup, striking out two in the bottom half.

The Eagles left two runners on base again in the top of the sixth and Stetson came to the plate swinging in the bottom. Back-to-back singles to lead off the frame and a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position right away. Josh Powers then singled through the left side just under the glove of a hustling Reardon to score one run and tie the game at two. Smeltzer struck out the next batter and then issued a walk to load the bags. The freshman would, however, buckle down and strike out Austin Hale to end the inning.

Smeltzer concluded his stellar outing with a pair of ground balls and a strikeout in the top of the seventh to keep this was knotted at two. Bottomley singled to lead off the top of the eighth and moved up to second on a passed ball then two batters later advanced to third on another passed ball. He would be left at third though when Bryan Voelkl bounced out to short to end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth Patrick Mazeika singles up the middle to lead off and the subsequent sacrifice bunt attempt would be spoiled when Smeltzer made a great defensive play to get the lead runner at second for the first out. Desguin took over for Smeltzer at that point and threw just four pitches to get a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Reardon worked a full count as the leadoff man in the top of the ninth before working a walk. Selesky sacrificed the freshman over to second and the Hatter would opt to intentionally walk Rivera to set up the force play with Noll stepping in. The sophomore rolled a 1-1 offering right at the Stetson second-baseman who stepped on the bag and fired to first for the double play to end the threat for FGCU.

Stetson would have a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth but Desguin had other ideas as he would retire the side in order to send this one to extras. Spivey led off the first free frame with a single that buzzed the tower of Walker Sheller then moved up to second on a wild pitch with one out and Brady Anderson at the plate. Anderson delivered a double down the line in left on the next pitch, scoring Spivey and putting the Eagles in front 3-2. FGCU would leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th, leaving Desguin just a one-run lead to protect in the bottom half.

Tyler Bocock worked a full count against Desguin and on the 10th pitch of the at-bat sent a lazy fly ball to shallow center for the first out. Vance Vizcaino battled as well before chopping a high bouncer to third that he would beat to first for an infield single, bringing the winning run, Cory Reid to the dish who hit a walk-off homerun in the 16th against Jacksonville on Wednesday night. He would put the ball in the air but not very deep as the pop-up settled in the glove of Jake Noll for the second out. Desguin would put the next batter in an 0-2 hole before getting a ground ball towards short that Reardon booted to put runners on first and second. Desguin took matters into his own hands at that point, striking out Will Mackenzie on a 1-2 breaking ball to end the game and move the Eagles on to a date with the Ospreys of UNF.

NOTES
The start of this game was originally slated for 3 p.m. but lightning strikes in the area caused a delay that lasted just over five hours and first pitch was finally thrown at 8:03 p.m. The winner of this game was initially supposed to take on North Florida at 7 p.m. but that game was moved to an 11 a.m. start tomorrow.

The winner of tomorrow's FGCU/UNF matchup will face Lipscomb in the first of potentially two games with the Bisons. By virtue of Lipscomb being undefeated to this point, someone must beat them twice to be crowned champions. Should the Bisons drop the first game, the second will wait to be played on Sunday afternoon per NCAA rules not allowing a single team to play three games in one day.

The only eligible starting pitcher to make at least six starts for the Eagles this season that has not worked extensively in this tournament is Josh Dye (Deland, Fla./Deland HS) who threw two innings against Kennesaw State on Thursday.
