DELAND, Fla. - The FGCU baseball team (27-24-1, 10-9 A-Sun) took an early lead but Stetson (28-27, 12-8 A-Sun) poured on eight runs to secure an 8-2 win and ensure a series victory after winning on Thursday night as well. The regular season finale will take place tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. with
Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) set to take the hill for FGCU.
"We didn't have our best today," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "We just never got anything going and credit to them they capitalized on their opportunities to beat us. We have a chance tomorrow to salvage the weekend and end the regular season on a high note."
Four Eagles collected two hits with
Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) and
Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) leading the way with an RBI each. Anderson and
Zach Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) also collected two hits while two others managed just one.
Hometown kid, freshman
Josh Dye (Deland, Fla./Deland HS) made the start for the Eagles on Friday night and would toss 4.1 innings while allowing seven hits and five runs, striking out one and walking one to take his second loss of the season.
Jordan Desguin (Newport Beach, Cal./Newport Harbor) took over and tossed 1.1 innings of relief, giving up three runs. Two relievers would combine to complete the rest of the game for FGCU.
With one out in the top of the first, Selesky wore a pitch to put a runner on for Rivera who singled to center, putting runners on the corner. Noll came to the plate and bounced a ball to short. Rivera would be retired at second but Noll beat out the double play allowing Selesky to score and put the Eagles ahead 1-0 early.Â
Dye would keep the Hatters at bay over the first two frames but the home team offense would break out in the bottom of the third. A one-out double put a runner in scoring position for Vance Vizcaino who singled through the right side of the infield to put runners on first and third. A hit batter loaded the bases and Mazeika singled through the right side, driving in two and giving Stetson its first lead of the ball game.
Stetson added a run in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead but the Eagles would respond in the top of the fifth. Reardon led off the frame with a double to right center on a 3-2 pitch. With one out, Rivera stepped up and singled home RBI number 64 for the season to make it a 3-2 game heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Dye would start the inning but would be relieved by Desguin after putting two on with one out. A wild pitch from Desguin put both runners in scoring position before Powers doubled down the line in right to make a 5-2 game. A sacrifice fly added a third run to make it 6-2. The Hatters added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring in this one. FGCU went down in order in the ninth to secure the loss.
