DELAND, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (28-24-1, 11-9 A-Sun) avoided a sweep on Saturday afternoon and handed Stetson (28-28, 12-9 A-Sun) a 4-3 loss on its home field to end the 2015 regular season. The Eagles finish the year with an 11-9 record in Atlantic Sun play, earn the No. 5 seed in the A-Sun Championship and will square off with No. 2 seed Lipscomb (35-18, 13-8 A-Sun) next Wednesday at Swanson Stadium at 7 p.m.
"It was great to get this win today," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "Smeltzer pitched probably as well as he has all season and for Sterling to come in and do what he did over the last five innings to lock this one down was huge. Hopefully this gives us some momentum heading back home for the tournament. Any team in this thing could win it so we're looking forward to taking a shot at it at our place."
Devin Smeltzer (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) made the start on the mound for the Green and Blue and tossed 4.0 innings of five-hit ball, allowing two runs and striking out two. The freshman would throw 67 pitches and face 17 batters without factoring in the decision.
Sterling Koerner (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carrol HS) came on in relief and cruised in dominating fashion as he has all season long. He would roll through 5.0 innings of work while allowing just one run and striking out two. The sophomore closes the regular season with 3.00 ERA and six victories, the most of any Eagle while striking out 46.
Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) went 1-2 at the plate on Saturday and drove in three more runs to bring his season total to 67 and secure the regular season RBI crown among A-Sun hitters. He is now just seven RBI short of the FGCU single-season record of 74 set by Jason Louwsma in 2006. For the weekend Rivera finished with a .400 average, a double, a triple and eight runs batted in.
Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) led off the game for the Green and Blue with a single to left and
Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) followed with one of his two hits to put runners on the corners for Rivera who sent a sacrifice fly to deep center to put the Eagles ahead first. Selesky would be stranded at first when the inning came to an end, putting Smeltzer on the mound make his ninth start of the year.
Smeltzer would walk the first batter he faced and the runner would steal second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Another walk would follow a strikeout the runners would move to second and third on a wild pitch. Will Mackenzie came to the plate with one out and stroked a single down the line in left, driving in two runs to give Stetson a 2-1 lead. Smeltzer would get the next batter to bounce into a double play to avoid further damage.
After a clean second inning,
Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) reached on a fielding error to lead off the third. With one out, Selesky singled through the right side to put runners on first and second for Rivera who ripped a double to the gap in right center, driving in two to push the Green and Blue ahead 3-2. Smeltzer came on and cruised through a perfect bottom half to maintain the lead. The Eagles would tack on a fourth and final run in the top of the fourth inning before Koerner came on and locked down the Hatters over the final five frames to secure the victory.
