The Eagles will take a break from midweek action and return to the field on Thursday opposite USC Upstate (9-19, 1-2 A-Sun) at Swanson Stadium for the first of a three-game set beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Josh Dye (Deland, Fla./Deland HS) made the start for the Eagles on Sunday and tossed 3.2 innings of five hit ball while allowing one run and striking out one. He would not factor in the decision. The lefty would turn the ball over to
Jordan Desguin (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) who worked 1.2 innings in relief after tossing a complete game at Miami on Wednesday night.
Garrett Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) would take the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the eighth.
Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) stayed hot at the plate, going 3-5 with a run scored while both
Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) and
Colton Bottomley (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) each collected two hits and a pair of RBI to pace the offense for the Green and Blue. Rivera has now built an 11-game hit streak while also reaching base in 23-straight games.
Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) went 1-4 and has now reached base safely in 21-straight games. The only other Eagle to collect multiple hits was
Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) who went 2-4 with a run out of the DH spot. Preseason All-American
Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) went 1-4 at the plate with two runs.
"It is disappointing that we didn't come away with the sweep," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "We had a lead and we let it get away. Sweeps are very hard to come by in this league and are very valuable when you can get them. While I'm glad we won the series it's just tough to leave here with a sour taste."
FGCU was the first to strike in this one and it all started with a Selesky single with one out in the first. Noll followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners for Rivera who would ground out, moving Noll up to second. Bottomley then came to the plate and ripped a single back through the middle to drive in two runs giving him 23 for the season.
UNF cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first but Dye would limit the damage to just one. In the top of the third, Selesky led off with one of his three singles and Noll would reach on a fielder's choice that saw Selesky retired on the play. Noll would steal second, his 11th swipe of the season, to move into scoring position for Rivera who delivered an RBI single through the right side to make it 3-1 FGCU.
Both teams would hold serve until the top of the seventh when
Brady Anderson came to the plate with one out and singled through the left side. Reardon then legged out and infield single allowing Noll to come to the plate with two on. Noll bounced a ball towards short that the UNF infielder couldn't handle, allowing Anderson to score from third and push the lead up to 4-1. Rivera then sent a sacrifice fly to center to drive in his second run of the ball game, giving him an even 30 for the season.
Sterling Koerner (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carrol HS) took the mound for the Eagles to start the seventh. A throwing error by Selesky allowed the leadoff man to reach and a subsequent double down the line allowed the first run of the frame to score. Roberson then came to the plate and singled to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Devin Smeltzer (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) came out of the bullpen to relieve Koerner and gave up a single up the middle to Donnie Dewees right away that brought in another run.
Garrett Anderson would take over from there but two more runs would come around to score before the inning was over and the game was tied.
The Eagles went down in order in the top of the eighth and in the bottom half, with Anderson still on the mound and two outs, Brooks legged out a bunt single. Roberson then lifted a single through the left side to to put runners on the corners with two away in the tie game.
Andris Gonzalez (Miami, Fla./Indian River State College) came in to face Dewees but the Osprey would deliver a single that brought in the go-ahead run. FGCU would go down in order in the top of the ninth to secure the victory for UNF.
