JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (13-13-1, 1-0 A-Sun) fell behind North Florida (19-10, 0-1 A-Sun) in the first inning but came from behind and took a commanding lead that the Ospreys couldn't overcome, allowing the Eagles to come away with a win in their Atlantic Sun opener, 9-7. Mike Murray would pick up the victory on the mound while three Eagles in the lineup would drive in multiple runs.

The Eagles would collect 11 hits at the plate led by Colton Bottomley (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) who went 3-4 with a homerun, two RBI and three runs scored. Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) went 2-3 at the plate and drove in two while Zachary Orchard (Cambridge, Ontario/Jacob Hespeler SS) went 1-4 with a two RBI as well. Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) stayed hot at the plate going 2-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS)  kept his streak of games with a  run driven in alive going 1-5 with an RBI and a run. He has now driven in at least one run in each of the Eagles' last six games.

Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forrest Hill HS) didn't have his best stuff tonight but battled nonetheless. After surrendering a pair of solo homeruns in the first he settled in and worked through 5.1 innings but he would give up 10 hits and six earned while striking out three to ultimately pick up the win. Devin Smeltzer (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) would come on to get one out in the sixth before Sterling Koerner (Fort Pierce, Fla./John Carrol HS) took over and closed out the final 3.1 innings of this one to earn his first save of the season.

"This is a big win for us," head coach Dave Tollett said, "We came in here and were down early but we moved runners and came up with big hits to build a lead. Our bullpen picked up Mike and Sterling in particular really pitched well down the stretch to lock this one up."

Murray would surrender back-to-back homeruns to left to Donnie Dewees and Trent Higginbothem in the bottom of the first to give the Ospreys and early 2-0 lead but it would not last for long. Bottomley would single with one out in the top of the second and with two outs Orchard ripped a double to deep left center allowing Bottomley to circle the bags and cut the UNF lead in half.

The Eagle bats would come to the plate still trailing 2-1 in the top of the third and Reardon would lead off with a single through the right side. Selesky laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Reardon into scoring position for Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) who sent a fly ball to center that moved Reardon up to third. Rivera then came to the plate and singled down the right field line to tie the score at 2-2. Bottomley then cracked his second homer of the season to right, driving in Rivera and giving the Green and Blue a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Blake Berger (Jacksonville, Fla./Santa Fe College) led off the frame with a walk and circled the diamond to score on a Reardon double to center with one out. Selesky then singled to drive in Reardon and make it 6-2. That would be all the Eagles would manage in the fourth.

The offense continued to roll in the fifth, this time led off by a Bottomley double to right center. Zach Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) put down a sacrifice bunt that move Bottomley over to third for Orchard who sent a sacrifice fly out to center, bringing in Bottomley and pushing the Eagles ahead 7-2.

Murray would give up another pair of back-to-back homeruns to lead off the sixth, slimming the FGCU advantage to 7-4. A walk, a single, a groundout and another single would bring an end to Murray's day in favor of Smeltzer with FGCU now ahead just 7-5. Smeltzer would throw a wild pitch with a runner on third allowing the sixth UNF run to come in to score but he would induce a fly out before turning the ball over to Koerner who recorded the final out of the inning.

The score would hold at 7-6 until the top of the eighth when Berger singled through the right side to lead off. Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto HS) would pinch run for Berger with Adam Eggnatz (Tampa, Fla./Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate HS) at the plate. Eggnatz walked and a failed pick-off attempt would move both runners into scoring position. Reardon would go down on strikes but the third strike bounced away from the UNF catcher, allowing Anderson to scamper home and move ahead 8-6. Selesky then grounded out for the second out of the inning but another FGCU run would score on the play to make it 9-6.

Corbin Olmstead would homer for the Ospreys in the bottom of the eighth to make it 9-7 but Koerner would shut the door from there, keeping UNF off the base paths the rest of the way to secure the 9-7 victory for FGCU. The two programs will be back on the field tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Brady Anderson is scheduled to be on the mound for the Green and Blue.

BRADY ANDERSON
For the first time in his career, FGCU junior right-hander Brady Anderson was named the Atlantic Sun Co-Pitcher of the Week in the wake of his brilliant complete-game, 10 strikeout performance on Saturday afternoon. Anderson is the second Pitcher of the Week from FGCU chosen by the conference office this season.

It was Anderson's first complete-game of his career as he guided the Green and Blue to a 6-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman (6-19, 6-3 MEAC) and put his team in position to get a second-consecutive weekend sweep at home. Over 9.0 innings, Brady would allow just four hits and one walk while throwing only 101 pitches.

Anderson took the hill to make his third start of the season and first since Feb. 22 opposite Fordham. He had made seven relief appearances since his last start and entered the matchup with an ERA of 5.19 over 26.0 innings. He would get rolling from the start however and his 10 strikeouts, which are a career-high, now account for 30 percent of his 2015 total (30) and he would retire each of final 12 batters he faced in the game after giving up a hit to begin the sixth.

DAVE TOLLETT
In 12+ seasons of work, FGCU head coach Dave Tollett has compiled a 447-251-3 record as the only head coach in the program's history. He is a four-time Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year and has guided the Green and Blue to four A-Sun Regular Season Championships. His team has been ranked nationally on several occasions by multiple media outlets and has coached 35 All-Conference selections, 22 draft picks, 14 current minor leaguers, four A-Sun Pitchers of the Year, three All-Americans, one National Freshman Player of the Year, one National Player of the Year and one MLB All-Star.
