LP | Danny Garcia (4-1): 6.0 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 6 SOCORAL GABLES, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (12-13-1) rode a breakout effort on the mound from
Jordan Desguin (Newport Harbor, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) and a power surge from
Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) to an 8-1 victory on the road over No. 13 Miami (18-8, 6-3 ACC) on Wednesday night. The Eagles set the tone early and cruised to the win after dropping the first two games of the season series. It is the Eagles' first win over a ranked opponent since Feb. 27, 2014 when the Green and Blue downed No. 23 Florida on the road as well.
Rivera blasted two home runs deep into the Miami night, giving him three for the season and totaled five RBI on the two long balls with the first being a three-run shot in the top of the first to put the Eagles ahead early. The junior now has an FGCU best 27 RBI this season with nine doubles.
Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) drove in two runs while going 2-5 at the plate with a run scored. The freshman is now hitting .304 for the season.
Desguin made the first start of his FGCU career on Wednesday night and made an impression immediately. He would strike out the side in the bottom of the first inning and finish with five strikeouts overall against just one walk while only giving up four hits. The junior is now 3-0 this season with a 2.25 ERA over 24.0 innings on the hill for the Green and Blue. He has struck out 21 batters against four walks and opponents are hitting just .172 off him. He is the third different Eagle to toss a complete game this season and all three have come in the last five games. He joins the likes of
Mike Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forrest Hill HS) and
Brady Anderson (Arcardia, Fla./DeSoto HS) the latter of which was named Atlantic Sun Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
"Jordan and Nick really set the tone for us tonight," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "Nick got it started with one of the longest home runs I've ever seen at this park in the first and Jordan followed that up by striking the side out in the first which really fired up our guys. We played the best we've played all year tonight and it couldn't come at a better time with conference play starting this weekend. I'm really proud of our guys; this was a huge win for us."
Reardon reached on an error to get things started in the top of the first and with one out,
Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS) singled through the left side bringing up Rivera who pelted his first home run of the night deep over the left field wall to make it 3-0 very quickly. Desguin then took the mound in the bottom half and struck out the Miami trio of Chester, Eusebio and Iskenderian to set the tone for the evening.
In the top of the third Noll led off with a single to left and Rivera once again followed with a bomb to left to make it 5-0. Desguin retired the side in order in the second gave up one run in the third and stranded one runner in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Zachary Orchard (Cambridge, Ontario/Jacob Hespeler SS) singled to right in the sixth with one out and
Brady Anderson (Arcardia, Fla./DeSoto HS) singled as well to put runners on first and second for
Adam Eggnatz (Tampa, Fla./Middle Georgia College) who singled in the infield to load the bases. Reardon then singled to left to drive in one and Anderson came around to score on an error.
Desguin went on to retire the side in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. In the top of the eighth, Eggnatz doubled down the line in left with two outs and Reardon followed with an infield single, bringing Eggnatz around to score on the play to complete the scoring for FGCU. Desguin took the hill in the bottom of the ninth and picked up a strikeout and a fly out before issuing a two-out walk. He would then induce a game-ending groundout to give the Eagles the 8-1 victory.
NEXT UPThe Ealges will kick off Atlantic Sun play at North Florida (14-8) Mar. 27-29. The Ospreys posted an overall record of 22-31 and played their way into the A-Sun Tournament with an 11-16 league record. FGCU holds the edge in the all-time series, 17-7.
