FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team (5-4-1) completed a perfect pair of midweek games on Wednesday when it defeated Siena (1-6) by a score of 9-5 after collecting 14 hits. The Eagles erased an early 2-0 deficit, took the lead with a four-run fourth and never looked back to claim their fifth victory of the 2015 season.
Jack English (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) made his first start of the season on Wednesday afternoon and struggled in the first. He would walk two, strike out one and surrender two runs before turning things over to
Jordan Desguin (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor HS/Feather River College). The right-hander would escape the first with no further damage and work 3.2 innings for the Eagles, allowing just one run to pick up his first victory.
Five different Eagles would pick up two hits with
Colton Bottomley (Parkland, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) and
Blake Berger (Jacksonville, Fla./Santa Fe College) each driving in two runs. Bottomley continues to lead the Eagles with 12 RBI through ten games while
Jake Noll (Punta Gorda, Fla/Charlotte HS) and
Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) pace the offense with 12 hits each.
"We battled today," head coach
Dave Tollett said. "We didn't get rattled when we fell behind early and took a lead then worked hard to hold them off the rest of the way. They're a good team that knows how to win, they won their league last year. We came up with big hits when we had chances to score and that's a sign of an improving team. We heading towards where we think we can be."
Siena started things off with a walk and a steal then a second walk to put two runners on with no out. English managed to pick up a strikeout but surrendered a double to the next batter allowing Siena to jump ahead, 1-0. Desguin would take over at that point and pick up a ground out but a second run would come across on the play to provide the Saints with an early 2-0 lead.
Noll led of the bottom of the fourth with a walk then was followed by a
Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) single through the right side. With one out, Selesky singled through the right side to drive in the first FGCU run of the afternoon. Berger then came to the plate and ripped a double to the gap in right-center, driving in two more runs and pushing the Eagles ahead 3-2. The rally continued with a
Brian Pruett (Sarasota, Fla./Coastal Carolina) single up the middle, driving in the fourth and final run of the inning.
Deguin would surrender a run in the top of the fifth and would be replaced by
Andris Gonzalez (Miami, Fla./Indian River State College) who picked up one out before giving way to
Brady Anderson (Arcardia, Fla./DeSoto HS) who would cruise through 3.1 innings of relief with just one hiccup, a two-run homerun in the eighth.
The Eagles picked up two runs in the sixth and sealed the game in the bottom of the eighth when leading 6-5.
Matt Reardon (Palm City, Fla./Martin County) led off with an infield single that was followed up by a Noll double to right putting two runners in scoring position for Rivera who walked. Bottomley then came to the plate and cooked a single to right, driving in two runs. With one out,
Zach Spivey (Ormond Beach, Fla./Spruce Creek HS) lifted a sacrifice fly to right, driving in the ninth and final run of the ball game for FGCU.
