Continuing to Break Records, @FGCU_WSWIM Extends Lead at 2015 CCSA Championship

ATHENS, Ga. -- Breaking four records and making one NCAA 'A' Cut at the 2015 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Conference Championship was not enough for the FGCU swimming & diving (10-2, 3-0 CCSA) team as it continued to impress at the meet by extending its lead to 280 points.

The Eagles lead the pack with a dominant 1114 points while Liberty sits in second with a score of 834. Georgia Southern (782.5), Gardner-Webb (675.5) and Incarnate Word (618) round out the top five.

The Green and Blue qualified for an NCAA 'A' Cut in the 400 yard medley relay which automatically sends them to the NCAA Finals which start on Mar. 19 in Greensboro, N.C. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Eagles also qualified for an NCAA 'A' Cut in the 200 yard medley on day one of the championship.

The 400 yard medley relay team posted a CCSA, CCSA Championship meet and an FGCU program-record 3:34.11. The team of Kira Toussaint (Amstelveen, Netherlands/Keizer Karel College), Katie Armitage (Bushey, United Kingdom/Queens School Bushey), Emma Svensson (Upsala, Sweden/Celsiusskolan) and Yee Wong (Hong Kong, China/Dlocesan Girls' School) beat out the defending champions in Liberty who finished in second with a time of 3:43.11.

"Things just keep getting better," said head coach Neal Studd. "I am so happy for our new NCAA qualifiers, Katie [Armitage] and Yee [Wong] tonight. We are going to have a huge presence at the NCAAs, it has taken our program to a new level!"

FGCU will look to cap the most dominating championship performance in CCSA history Saturday night. The Eagles' 1114 points are already 227 more than the most in CCSA Championship history – 887 set by FGCU in 2009.

By comparison, Liberty won last year's championship with 732.5 points, snapping FGCU's five-year run. The preliminaries get underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the finals set for 6 p.m. as FGCU looks to return to the top of the conference.

Toussaint and Sandra Wilk (Lexington, Ky./Paul Laurence Dunbar HS) finished in first and third, respectively, while qualifying for an NCAA 'B' Cut in the 100 yard backstroke with times of 52.82 and 54.71. The 100 yard breaststroke saw two more Eagles qualify for an NCAA 'B' Cut with Armitage and Evita Leter (Paramaribo, Suriname/Doral Academy) placing in first and third with times of 1:00.28 and 1:02.18.

Svensson qualified for the fifth NCAA 'B' on the night for the Eagles when she won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 53.22. Wong received a third-place finishing by posting a time of 54.86.

Up next for the Eagles was the 200 yard freestyle which saw Lani Cabrera (Barbados/St. Ursala's Secondary School) eclipse a 1:50 time with a first-place finish in 1:49.93. Sara Hamilton (Stonehaven, Scotland/Mackie Academy) finished the event in third with a time of 1:50.30.

The final event on the night for the Eagles was the 400 yard IM where Karen Vilorio (Tegucigalpa, Honduras/Elvel School) claimed another NCAA 'B' Cut with a second-place finish in a time of 4:18.31.

FGCU is led by Neal Studd, who has garnered four CCSA Coach of the Year awards, won five CCSA Championships (2009-13) and guided the Eagles to a 25-1 CCSA all-time record since FGCU started its program in 2007. In just three years of postseason eligibility, Studd has coached NCAA Championship Meet qualifiers and competitors each of the three years, with 2014 yielding the best results to date as the Eagles claimed 32nd place and produced two CSCAA All-America honorees.
