@FGCU_WTEN Heads to South Beach to Face No. 9 Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After picking up its second win of the season Wednesday afternoon against FAU (2-3) the FGCU women's tennis team (2-6) will travel to South Beach to take on No. 9 Miami (3-2) on Friday Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

After taking on No. 59 USF last Wednesday, No. 34 FSU last Saturday and FAU Wednesday, Friday's contest against No. 9 Miami marks the third match against a ranked opponent in the last four matches for the Green and Blue.

LAST TIME OUT
On Wednesday, FGCU took on FAU at the FGCU Tennis Complex and come away with its second victory of the season. The Eagles outmatched the Owls during the contest as they came away with a 7-0 win.

The duo of Elizabeth Means and Sarah Means (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Wiregrass Ranch HS) defeated the Owls' pair of Briggs and Cardullo by a 6-1 count in the No. 1 doubles slot while Breanna Stampfli (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago/St. Joseph's Convent) and Candela Munoz Giron (Alicante, Spain/Troy) picked up the second match win in doubles play to give the Eagles the first point by a 6-2 score in the No. 3 doubles slot.

After claiming the doubles point in the match the Green and Blue won every singles slot to gain the clean sweep. Johanna Sterkel (Schwetzingen, Germany/Carl-Theodor-Schule HS), who has been the primary No. 4 singles player for the Eagles leads the team in individual wins with a 5-2 record. The junior has been a strong force in the middle of the Eagles' lineup as the Schwetzingen, Germany native has wins over opponents from UCF, Louisiana Tech, Georgia State, No. 59 USF and FAU.

SCOUTING MIAMI
Miami enters Friday's contest with a 3-2 record with victories against UNF, FSU and Alabama and losses to North Carolina and UCLA.

FGCU is 0-2 all-time against Miami, during last year's contest between the two, FGCU only claimed one point which came in the No. 6 singles slot when Munoz Giron won 2-6, 6-2, 10-8, but the Eagles would ultimately fall 6-1.

NEXT UP
The Green and Blue will head back to South Beach on Saturday Feb. 28 when they take on the Panthers of FIU in a 2 p.m. start.

COURTNEY VERNON
FGCU is led by Courtney Vernon, whose inaugural campaign saw the Eagles finish third in the conference standings with a Division-I best 14 wins overall in 2013-14. She has produced five A-Sun All-Conference selections and the 2014 Freshman of the Year.
